AIFF drops plans for football academy in Goa, Haryana frontrunner

New Delhi, March 18  The All India Football Federation (AIFF) and Bharti Enterprises Wednesday decided to drop plans to build a Rs.1 billion state of the art academy at Cuncolim in Goa due to delay in acquiring the land for the project.

Last month AIFF’s acting president and central minister Praful Patel asked Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat to broker peace between warring local football leaders within eight days, failing which the proposed football academy would be shifted to Haryana.

And nearly a month after being set a deadline, the Goa government failed to transfer the 126,000 square metres of the land to the AIFF.

In a joint statement both the AIFF and Bharti said: “AIFF and Bharti Enterprises have dropped the proposal to set up Bharti-AIFF Football Academy at Cuncolim, Goa. In a letter to Joaquim Alemao, urban development minister and president of Goa Football Association (GFA), we have informed our decision to drop the academy from Goa, due to the long delay in finalising the transfer of land to the AIFF.”
The academy is now likely to be shifted to Haryana.
“We will have no other option but to shift the academy to Haryana. Ideally we would not like to shift, but we are under immense pressure to take a decision,” Patel said last month.
Haryana Football Association (HFA) secretary Sunil Bharadwaj told IANS that the state was in the fray to have the academy.
“We were always interested to have the academy in the state. Now since the AIFF has decided to drop the academy from Goa, we will try our best to see that the academy comes to Haryana,” said Bharadwaj.
The project was to start in last March but ran into rough weather with two powerful Goan politicians locking horns. Local sentiments have also been aroused to block the academy from coming up at Cuncolim.
The tussle between Alemao and housing minister Mickky Pacheco turned into a war of words and inordinate delay in the clearance. Pacheco claimed that the land belonged to his department and accused Alemao of illegally transferring the land for the academy.

There are also whispers that the famous Three Lions emblem has been redesigned, based on a simpler version from 1948.
Snappy dresser and coach Capello, 62, hopes the fancy togs will inspire his players to winning ways in the World Cup qualifying game.
The new Umbro kit has been shrouded in secrecy, with FA top brass kept in the dark.

UNCHALLENGED: Manipur eased past West Bengal to retain the senior National women’s football title at Neyveli on Sunday.
NEYVELI: Manipur eased past West Bengal 2-0 to retain the title in the 17th senior National women’s football championship at the Bharathi Stadium here on Sunday. It is the 15th National title for Manipur, the last 12 of them coming on the trot.
Bengal held the upper hand in the initial part of the encounter. The first 15 minutes of play saw Bengal’s Aduri Khatun’s free-kick sailing over the post and Shilpi Deb missing a couple of easy chances.
Manipur midfielders took a bit of time to settle down, but once they got into the act, things changed dramatically.
Momentum shift Bengal custodian Ranjta Khan misjudged a lobbed free-kick from Y. Kamala Devi, which sailed past her into the goal.
That effort led to a momentum shift and Manipur forwards started penetrating the rival defence more often. O. Bembem Devi almost increased the lead in the dying minutes of the first half, but her strike hit the post. After the break, Manipur women were at their brilliant best and hardly gave Bengal any chance to make a comeback. Apart from feeding the forwards with some precise passes, Manipur midfielders also blocked the opponent’s moves effectively. Bala Devi and Tababi Devi caused plenty of problems to the Bengal defenders. Both of them came agonisingly close to scoring on more than a few occasions. Any chance of Bengal getting back into the game was nipped when Tababi Devi netted in the 62nd minute.
The result: Final: Manipur 2 (Y. Kamala Devi, Tababi Devi) bt West Bengal 0.

Liverpool’s Gerrard doesn’t think Man U can win Premier league

LONDON- Riding high on his sides stunning performance to beat Manchester United 4-1, Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has raised questions over United’s hope of bouncing back in the league.

Gerrard said he still hopes that Liverpool
can pull it off and win the title.

“I think we can still win the league. It is still tough, there is still a big gap and we are running out of time as there are not many games left,” he said.

Gerrard said his team wants to continue its winning spree after handed over a defeat to Real Madrid at home followed by a win over Manchester United.

Coach Rafa Benitez also showered praise on his squad’s stupendous performance in the last two games, and hoped that his team continues the good work.

“We have to keep going the same way. It was a great day for the supporters and we are really happy. To beat Real and now United with four goals in each game is very good,” The Sun quoted Benitez, as saying.

Churchill win five goal thriller

New Delhi, Mar 16 : Churchill Brothers beat Mumbai FC 3-2 in one of the most enthralling matches in the I-league this season at the Cooperage on Sunday to roar back to the top of the table.
Mumbai FC coach David Booth started with his usual 4-4-2 formation with Abhishek Yadav and Felix Aboagye playing upfront with Anees K and Abel Hammond playing on the wings.
GOING ON: Churchill Brothers beat Mumbai FC in an enthralling match in the I-league. Churchill’s starting line-up was the same they had used in their last match, with Gouramangi Singh and Rowilson Rodrigues playing at the heart of their defence.
First Half
The match started with the visitors getting the first chance when Khemtang Paite found Felix Chimaokwu on the left and the latter’s chip into the box saw Odafa Onyeka Okolie head over the bar.
In the 15th minute Mumbai's Sanjay Parte found Abel Hammond, whose cross into the box from the right deflected off Anees K's body into the back of the net.
Minutes later Felix Aboagye missed his shot from close range. Felix Aboagye then gave a through ball for Hammond from the right. Hammond took his shot from an acute angle but his shot went wide.
Churchill Brothers began to put pressure on the hosts and duly got their reward when Selwyn Fernandes’s foul gifted them a free kick from 25 yards out in the 27th minute. Robert Lalthampuana took the kick and the ball flew into the far corner of the net.
Minutes later Odafa Okolie took a long shot from 35 yards out that Mumbai custodian Kalyan Chaubey spilled and fended it off for a corner. But it appeared that Odafa had committed a foul on Selwyn Fernandes before taking the shot.
Second Half
Churchill started the second half the more attacking of the two sides. Ogba Kalu Nnanna initiated a counter attack and found Odafa, who released Paite on the right. Paite was pulled down by Fernandes and a free-kick was awarded to Churchill. Lalthampuana took it and it was headed by Naoba Singh into the back of the Mumbai FC net. This was in the 56th minute.
Churchill then started to play a bit more cautiously and tried to temper the tone of the match. But before long Mumbai FC were back in the hunt for the equaliser and on the hour mark got a good chance when Abhishek Yadav fed K Kulothangan. But the midfielder's shot went wide.
Mumbai made a double change in the 70th minute when Aboagye and Anees were taken off and Pradeep and Nishant Mehra were brought on. Moments later Mehra ran along the right flank and gave a cross. Pradeep took the shot but it was blocked.
It fell at Hammond's feet but his shot too was blocked by Churchill but the ball then went to Riston Rodrigues, whose shot was also blocked.
The visitors didn't sit back but launched attacks of their own. Chitrasen Chandam Singh sent the ball from the midfield to release Felix Chimaokwu. The striker gave a cross to Odafa, whose first touch let him down, and this allowed Mumbai goalkeeper Kalyan Chaubey to come out and clear the danger.
The match then became hugely entertaining as there was end-to-end stuff that kept everyone on the edge of their seats.
Mumbai FC eventually restored parity in the 84th minute when Alex Ambrose's cross from inside the box fell to Hammond. Lalthampuana, who was rushing from behind, made an attempt to clear the ball from danger but hit it into the back of the own net.
But Churchill made it 3-2 in their favour the very next minute when Mumbai were still celebrating. Odafa took a shot and it reached the back of the Mumbai FC net.
David Booth's side did try their best to score their third goal of the match and got their best chance in the last minute of added time when Ambrose failed to find the net from just five yards.
Goalscorers:
Mumbai FC: Anees K 15', Robert Lalthampuana 84'(OG)
Churchill Brothers: Robert Lalthampuana 27', Naoba Singh 56', Odafa Okolie 85'

Manipur starts favourite

NEYVELI: Manipur, 14-time champion and unbeaten so far in the 17th edition of the senior National women’s football championship will start as favourite against West Bengal in the final here on Sunday.
However, the Bengal coach Ranjana Chatterjee says that her team will give its best in the summit clash. “It is going to be tough, no doubt. But the girls have played well in the tournament, especially during pressure situations. We hope for the best,” she said.
Bengal is the only other State apart from Manipur to have won the National title. It did so in 1992 and 1997. On both the occasions, it defeated Manipur in the final.
Manipur had beaten Bengal in the quarterfinal league of the ongoing championship. But still, Manipur coach Premkanta Singh felt that final was a different ball game. “Having beaten Bengal earlier in the tournament is a psychological advantage. But we never take things for granted,” he said.

Liverpool on course to shatter ManU empire: Benitez

London, Mar 14: Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez is convinced that he is on course to shatter the Manchester United empire.

Benitez takes his side to Old Trafford on the back of Tuesday’s Euro win over Real Madrid. He knows even his first- ever league victory at United would leave the title as no more than a faint hope.

Manchester United, the defending champions would still be four points ahead, with a game in hand.

Yet the Spaniard has seen enough this term to back up his belief that he will eventually mastermind the toppling of United, even if it is not this season, The Sun reported.

"I think we can. This year has been better than before and, with one or two more goals, we could have been about four points closer. So, of course, we can do it," Benitez said.

"This year we’ve been up there for a long time. But we have also made some mistakes. If we cut those out in the future, we’ll be even closer. Then maybe the motivation would be different for everyone," he said.

Benitez put himself in the firing-line with his infamous rant against Ferguson, claiming he had too much influence over referees and got preferential treatment from the FA.

After his outburst before the draw at Stoke in early January, Liverpool went four games without a win and crashed out of the FA Cup at Everton. Meanwhile United cruised past them at the top.

Ferguson admitted he was baffled by what the Kop boss said, joking he would have to read more Freud before he could work the statements out.

West Bengal, Manipur in final

NEYVELI: Holder Manipur and West Bengal entered the final with contrasting wins in the 17th senior National women’s football championship at the Bharathi Stadium here on Friday.

Manipur scripted a comfortable 2-0 win over last year’s runner-up Orissa, while West Bengal won a penalty shootout 3-2 against Tamil Nadu, after the teams were locked 1-1 at the end of regulation and extra time.
It was a heart breaking loss for Tamil Nadu, which led for most part of the encounter. Vidyavathi’s spectacular 20-yard free kick put the host ahead in the 22nd minute.

Tamil Nadu could have increased the lead had its strikers capitalised on some of the good moves initiated by the midfielders. West Bengal players made attempts to equalise late in the first half, but Tamil Nadu defenders warded off the challenges with aplomb.

There was not much of an action in the early part of the second session, but the latter part certainly belonged to the West Bengal players, who repeatedly raided the rival defence.

Their persistence was finally rewarded when Shilpi Deb headed in the equaliser in the 69th minute and forced the match into extra time.

After a fruitless 20 minutes of extra time, the match was decided on shoot out.

In the other semifinal, K. Rebika Devi gave Manipur a 1-0 advantage in the 67th minute after a goalless first half. From then on, Manipur forwards grew in confidence and kept the rival defenders busy. Tababi Devis goal in the 74th minute settled the issue beyond doubt. The final will be played on Sunday.

Manchester City, Marseille win in UEFA Cup

HAMBURG - Manchester City bagged a 2-0 victory over Denmark’s Aalborg, while Italians Udinese hit holders Zenit St Petersburg with two late goals in first-leg matches in the pre-quarterfinals of the UEFA Cup.

Elsewhere Thursday there were narrow wins for Olympique Marseille, Werder Bremen, Dynamo Kiev and CSKA Moscow, while Galatasaray earned a 1-1 draw at SV Hamburg.

Holders Zenit fell to goals by Fabio Quagliarella five minutes from time and a penalty seven minutes into stoppage play by Antonio di Natale at Italians Udinese.

The Russians ended the game with 10 men after a second booking for Roman Shirokov following the penalty award.

Ecuador striker Felipe Caicedo struck early for Manchester City and Sean Wright-Phillips added a second after half an hour as Manchester City ran out 2-0 winners over Aalborg.

Olympique Marseille were the only one of the French trio to triumph, earning a 2-1 win over Ajax who had defender Gregory van der Wiel sent off after a second booking in the 42nd minute.

Benoit Cheyrou in the 18th and Mamadou Niang in the 33rd put Olympique in control but a 36th-minute strike from Luis Suarez gives the Dutch side every chance in the return leg.

SV Hamburg were unable to overcome a 10-man Galatasaray in a 1-1 draw.

The Turkish side, who won the competition in 2000, had Emre Asik sent off in the 53rd minute for a professional foul on Mladen Petric.

The dismissal came four minutes after Marcell Jansen had levelled a 32nd-minute goal from midfielder Ayhan Akman.

Collin Benjamin came close to a winner for the Bundesliga side with a shot headed off the line and onto the bar by Mehmet Guven.

But with 12,000 fans behind them among the 52,000 crowd in Hamburg, the Turkish side defended solidly for a draw they will be pleased with for the second leg next Thursday.

‘The 1-1 draw has put us in a good position but our biggest advantage are our fans,’ Galatasaray coach Bulent Korkmaz said in reference to the atmosphere expected next week inside the Ali Sami Yen stadium in Istanbul.

Hamburg’s northern neighbours Werder Bremen earned a 1-0 win over St Etienne, courtesy of a goal in the 20th minute by Brazilian central defender Naldo, but coach Thomas Schaaf said he was disappointed with his team’s performance.

‘We didn’t play the way we wanted,’ he said.

‘We allowed St Etienne to come back in the game. There was no clear play in the second half and you can’t be satisfied with that.’

A minute’s silence was observed before both games in Germany in memory of Wednesday’s school massacre near Stuttgart in which 16 people were killed.

Elsewhere, tournament top scorer Vagner Love notched his 11th of the campaign with a penalty five minutes after the break to give 2005 winners CSKA Moscow a 1-0 victory over Ukraine outfit Shakhtar Donetsk.

In an all-Ukrainian duel, Dynamo Kiev edged Metalist Kharkiv 1-0 thanks a 54th-minute winner from Ognjen Vukojevic, while Paris St Germain were held to a goalless draw by Portugal’s Sporting Braga.

Vasco V Mumbai (Mangopeel)
Vasco SC 1-2 Mumbai FC

This win takes Mumbai FC to fourth spot with 27 points having a three point lead over the now fifth placed Mahindra United.

Vasco SC are still reeling at the bottom and would need a miracle to save themselves from going down.

The home side took the lead after goalkeeper Liyaz Koya committed a foul inside the box and Sherzod Nazarov stepped up to the task and didn’t disappoint.

However, Mumbai FC fought well and quickly equalised. Alex Ambrose, who was handed a rare start alongside Abhishek Yadav, sent in a perfect cross which was headed in by the latter in the 10th minute.

In the second session, a Mumbai FC defender’s header allowed Vasco’s Sherzod Nazarov in a one-on-one position but goalkeeper Liyaz Koya came out to make a crucial tackle and thus was sent-off for the same.

With all three substitutions being used, Coach David Booth asked defender James Dissiramah to play as a makeshift custodian while Abhishek Yadav filled in as a stopperback.

The final 15 minutes saw Mumbai FC doing their best to keep the scoreline intact and even managed to score the winner through Kalia Kulothungan.

De Rossi sees red as Roma held by Udinese

Rome - Roma had captain Daniele De Rossi sent off as they were held to a 1-1 home draw by visiting Udinese in the Serie A Saturday to dent their pursuit of a Champions League berth.

Roma are now level with Genoa and one point behind Fiorentina, in the fourth Champions League qualifying place, who could improve their tally Sunday when Palermo are the visitors.

Brazilian defender Felipe put Udinese ahead in the second half before an equalizer from substitute Mirko Vucinic.

The crowd at Rome's Stadio Olimpico had little to cheer as Udinese dominated in midfield leaving little room for Roma to feed lone striker Julio Baptista.

Brazilian Rodrigo Taddei squandered Roma's best chance on eight minutes after a poor defensive clearance, while Udine threatened with wide drives from Antonio Floro Flores and Ghanaian Kwadwo Asamoah.

Roma's veteran striker Vincenzo Montella came on after the break and immediately fired narrowly wide, but it was Udinese who took the lead on 54 minutes when Felipe scored an easy header off a pass from Antonio Di Natale.

The stunned hosts brought on Montenegro striker Vucinic, who on 61 minutes levelled with a low drive by the far post.

But hopes of securing victory were set back on 68 minutes when De Rossi was shown a red card for protesting vehemently after a team-mate's foul.

Roma still came close in the last 10 minutes, with Montella blocked by goalkeeper Samir Handanovic and Vucinic missing a lob.

In later action, leaders Inter Milan, on 60 points, visit solid Genoa and Juventus, lying second seven points adrift, play a city derby against lowly Torino.

Hiddink warns against perils of booze culture

Cobham, March 07: Guus Hiddink has warned Chelsea's stars to ensure they don't become victims of England's booze culture.

Blues boss Hiddink got his first taste of the controversy that can blow up when a high-profile player is out drinking late at night after Ashley Cole was arrested for drunk and disorderly conduct at a west London restaurant this week.

Cole, who was with Chelsea team-mates John Terry and Michael Mancienne at the time, was fined 80 pounds for abusing police officers who he claimed wouldn't help get rid of photographers harassing him at South Kensington's Collection restaurant.

Although Hiddink did not leave Cole out of Chelsea's squad for their FA Cup quarter-final at Coventry on Saturday, he did give the England left-back a stern talking to.

Hiddink knows the tendency to drink to excess in England will inevitably lead players into compromising situations and he has been quick to remind his squad of their responsibilities to the club.

He highlighted the way Real Madrid players would always have wine with their pre-match meal during his time with the Spanish club, but were self-policed by senior players to ensure drinking never got out of hand.

"If you drink too much it has a setback on your physical condition," Hiddink said. "Physically you can harm yourself when you drink too much and then you can harm the team as well.”

"It is to do with culture. At Real Madrid when we went to away matches, the captains - Fernando Hierro and Manuel Sanchis - would load a box of wine onto the bus.”

"I thought 'what is going on here?' I came from 'sober' Holland and I was amazed.”

"On every table at the meal the captain would put a bottle of wine. I was not used to this but they said it was normal to do that and I didn't break that rule because they were used to doing it. Hierro and Sanchis controlled it so I didn't have to do anything."

When Arsene Wenger arrived at Arsenal he immediately banned the players from having any alcohol, but the culture of binge drinking remains prevalent in English society and football.

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has recently tried to quash any drinking among his squad, but although Hiddink is often a strict boss, he admits he wants Chelsea's players to understand the risks and make the decision not to drink for themselves.

"I fully agree with Redknapp and Arsene Wenger. But I cannot and I will not control their private lives," he said.

"Players in this fantastic job have a responsibility to themselves and their club.”

"I am not a police officer. Nor am I a father figure. I want to be able to have a very open relationship with them.”

"I want to be able to speak very directly with them. Sometimes to hug them and sometimes to be tough."

Even Hiddink, however, was forced to admit he was amazed that players as experienced as Cole and Terry had been out in such a public place until the early hours.

Both have been involved in late-night scandals before in their careers and Hiddink said: "I am not coming from an innocent country. It is not my first year in this business and I have some experience of these situations.”

"To be honest, it is amazing. If you fall once in one trap, you must try and avoid it the second time.”

"Sometimes the players are challenged by a situation but you have to be disciplined. Sometimes there is human reaction, but it is curious when you mention the players that it is like that.”

"You have to know at a certain time when you have to leave and not get involved in certain things.”

"We ask everyone to live a proper life. That is not to say they don't have the right to go out but they must have their own discipline towards the team and the public."

Celtic eye St Mirren in cup clash

Glasgow, March 07: Celtic make the short journey to Paisley on Saturday to take on St Mirren in their Scottish Cup quarter-final tie, just a week after the Parkhead side thrashed the Buddies in the league.

A second-half collapse by ten-men St Mirren saw them ship seven goals to the Old Firm giants with Japanese international Shunsuke Nakamura hitting a hat-trick in the match.

Now the Paisley side have a chance for revenge in the Scottish Cup as they host the Hoops at New St Mirren Park for the first time.

The Buddies are unbeaten at their new home and will want to restore some pride as they look to win the cup for the first time since 1987.

After struggling for form in 2009 Celtic added to their confidence-building win against St Mirren with a mid-week victory over Kilmarnock which sent the champions back to the top of the Scottish Premier League.

Defender Glenn Loovens says the thrashing of the Buddies has sparked a Celtic revival and the Dutchman hopes to get more time on the pitch as the club bids to win a domestic treble, with an Old Firm League Cup final next up after St Mirren.

"Scoring a lot of goals is what the team needed," he said. "It's good for the confidence as it's always nice to get a good win, especially as we have a lot of games coming up.

"For me I just have to wait for the manager to put me in again and, as I said, there are a lot of games coming up and I hope I get another 90 minutes.

"We have a strong squad as it's been important all season to change the team a lot and we really need every player now. We know that if a player gets injured or is suspended that we have enough depth to fill it."

On Sunday, Scottish Cup holders Rangers could welcome back midfielder Pedro Mendes to the starting line-up for their quarter-final tie against Hamilton at Ibrox.

The Portuguese has been sidelined for the last two games with a thigh strain but scans revealed there was no tear in the muscle and he should partner Barry Ferguson in the centre of midfield.

The two sides clashed at New Douglas Park in the league last weekend with a goal from Ferguson enough to give the Gers victory.

Manager Walter Smith will settle for the same again this weekend after his side lost their grip at the top of the Premier League following their shock midweek defeat to Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

Lee McCulloch and Nacho Novo are expected to miss the game through injury although they could be fit for next weekend's League Cup final at Hampden.

In Saturday's other ties the Aberdeen management team of Jimmy Calderwood and Jimmy Nicholl return to their former club as the Dons take on first division Dunfermline.

Falkirk host Inverness with Terry Butcher's side high in confidence following their win over Rangers, but both two sides are locked in a relegation battle and could view their tie as an unwanted distraction.

Brazilian Rodrigo to play for Dempo in AFC Cup

Margao, March 07: Brazilian midfielder Rodrigo Mendes D'Silva has been registered to play for Dempo Sports Club in place of Mboyo Iyomi for the AFC Cup tie against Syria's Al Maged on Tuesday at Nehru Stadium here.

Rodrigo is brother of Dempo's playmaker Roberto D'Silva.

"We will be playing with three foreigners instead of two who played against Al Sharjah in the semi-finals of the AFC Championship League," said Dempo coach Armando Colaco.

The inclusion of Rodrigo in the midfield will be a boost for us as we will have the option of deploying Roberto D'Silva in front along with Nigerian Ranty Martins, he said.

"With the team having lost the chance of defending the I-League title, we are concentrating on the match against Al Maged," Colaco said.

"We have to do our best and secure an early goal to put pressure on them and win the match."

The 32-member Syrian team, including 12 officials, arrived here yesterday.

Fulham out to make it bitter Cup for Utd

London, March 07: Roy Hodgson has been around long enough to remember the last time Fulham reached an FA Cup final.

That was 34 years ago and Hodgson was just a year away from embarking on a managerial career that has seen him fill 16 coaching posts in Denmark, England, Italy, Sweden and Switzerland.

Now 61, Hodgson has put all his experience to good use in lifting Fulham from the brink of relegation to within sight of European football in just over a year in charge.

And he is relishing the prospect of derailing Manchester United's charge for an unprecedented haul of five trophies by pulling off an upset in a quarter-final meeting what is arguably the pick of this weekend's ties.

Fulham's run to the last eight has triggered thoughts of the club's last Wembley appearance, the 1975 final.

"This is my first time in the quarter-finals," Hodgson said. "It would be lovely if we could reach the semi-final and even better if Fulham could recreate the magic of 1975."

Hodgson was a spectator at Wembley that day as Alec Stock's side went down to a 2-0 defeat by West Ham.

"Fulham were in the old Second Division at the time but had just brought back Alan Mullery and signed Bobby Moore, people who boosted the team," Hodgson recalled.

"I clearly remember before the game Stock was asked if he was worried about the game, as they were coming up against the famous West Ham team, which contained so many World Cup winners.

"His response? 'Not at all, we're going to have a thunderingly good day out!' The FA Cup is part of the Fulham tradition."

While United pursue their 'quintuple' Chelsea will be looking to extend their winning start to life under Guus Hiddink to five matches. The Dutchman watched his new charges dispatch Watford in the last round but had not formally taken over the team.

Three weeks later, his influence has been clearly stamped on a Chelsea side that looks better organised and significantly more motivated than it did under Luiz Felipe Scolari.

With Michael Essien set to feature for the first time since rupturing knee ligaments in September and Ricardo Carvalho also fit again, Hiddink is set to benefit from a strengthened squad and it is hard to imagine a Coventry side currently residing in the bottom half of the Championship delaying their progress to the last four.

Burnley will also fly the flag for English football's second tier although Owen Coyle's giant killing side are only at the fifth round stage.

They visit Arsenal on Sunday, looking for a memorable double following their elimination of Arsene Wenger's youngsters from the League Cup in December.

Burnley also accounted for Fulham and Chelsea in that competition and have already beaten Premier League outfit West Brom in the FA Cup.

Arsenal though appear to be on the up having put together an unbeaten run of 16 matches in all competitions and will expect to progress to a quarter-final home tie against Hull.

The final clash of the weekend sees Middlesbrough -- inspired against Liverpool last weekend but woeful against Tottenham on Wednesday -- travel to Everton, for whom the Cup represents the last chance of silverware this season.

Beckham's American dream

By Simon Austin
David Beckham
The LA Galaxy jersey was Adidas's worldwide best seller in 2007

When David Beckham was unveiled by LA Galaxy in July 2007, he presented himself as a modern-day missionary who would take "soccer" to the American masses.

"Some people laughed at me, but this move is not about the money," he insisted after signing a five-year deal estimated to be worth $10m per season.
"The main thing is to improve the standard and be part of history really. I think soccer can be a lot bigger in the US."
Less than two years on, the project already appears to be drawing to a close. Beckham will return to Los Angeles in mid-July to play out the remainder of the Major League Soccer season, which finishes in November, and then seems certain to exercise a "break clause" allowing him to leave after three seasons.
The 33-year-old's obvious relish at playing for Milan and his eagerness to move permanently to the San Siro have seemed to damn the MLS by implication.
So it would be easy to dismiss Beckham's American odyssey as a failure and that's what many will do. But if you talk to people involved in MLS and look at the facts and figures, a different story emerges.
The former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol is ideally placed to assess Beckham's influence. The Scot has lived in the States for the past decade and has been head coach of the New England Revolution since 2002.
"Beckham's impact here has been absolutely huge," he told BBC Sport. "Soccer was already becoming more popular before he arrived, but he has greatly accelerated the process.
Beckham's impact on MLS attendances

"People who had no interest in the game a couple of years ago now know about it, which is down to David."
Helping to get football into the national consciousness has been Beckham's greatest achievement, agrees Professor Andrei Markovits of the University of Michigan.
Markovits is the author of the book Offside: Soccer and American Exceptionalism, which explores why football has never become the phenomenon in America that it has in the rest of the world.
"Beckham turned soccer into a household word and you can't monetise that," Markovits told BBC Sport.
"He created a buzz that no-one else could have matched, not even Lionel Messi or Kaka. When Beckham arrived, there were big ads of him in his underwear on the sides of the street, Posh had her own TV show, they were friends with Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated - the immediate impact was immense.
"When you went to the checkout, people were talking about him, when you switched on the TV he was on a talk show and when you opened a tabloid, there he was. It created a big ripple effect."
This had an immediate impact on MLS attendances. When Galaxy travelled to the New York Red Bulls on 18 August 2007, shortly after Beckham had moved over from Real Madrid, a league-record crowd of 66,237 packed into the Giants Stadium to watch a thrilling 5-4 win for the home side.
LA Galaxy's average home attendance in 2008 was 26,009, a dramatic 24.9% increase on 2006, while MLS attendances as a whole went up 6.9% during the same period.
David Beckham on the cover of Sports Illustrated
Beckham's arrival was big news in the US media
Eleven of the 13 teams recorded their biggest 2008 gates when Beckham's Galaxy were in town and the former England skipper's appeal was such that fans demanded refunds if he wasn't playing.
His impact on television ratings was also significant, with average viewing figures on ESPN increasing by 23% when the midfielder featured.
That said, the numbers watching MLS on American television were still extremely modest. An average of 253,000 people watched live matches on ESPN in 2008, which was comparable with the viewing figures for women's basketball.
MLS did start to feature prominently in the daily news agenda while Beckham was in the States though, as Markovits explains. "ESPN's Sports Centre, the worldwide leader in sports, never used to feature soccer," he said, "but now it is often the second or third item in its running order."
And whereas Nicol was unable to find any information about the English Premier League when he first moved to America, there is now a 24-hour football channel, Fox Soccer, as well as ESPN, newspapers and the internet to keep him abreast of the latest news.
Beckham has also been a huge success in sponsorship and marketing terms. In 2007, Galaxy became the first side in the history of US team sports to feature a sponsor's name, Herbalife, on their shirts.
It turned into a great deal for both parties, with Galaxy being paid $4.5m to $5m a season, according to New York's reputable Sports Business Journal, and the nutrition company gaining exposure around the world thanks to Beckham.
BECKHAM'S IMPACT: KEY STATS
ESPN viewing figures 23% higher for games Beckham plays in
Galaxy's 2007 revenue accounts for more than a fifth of the MLS total
League-record crowd of 66,237 watches Beckham play for LA against New York in August 2007
Galaxy became the first team in the history of US team sports to have a shirt sponsor in 2007
LA Galaxy jersey is Adidas's worldwide best seller in 2007
Beckham played a total of 30 matches for Galaxy, contributing five goals and 12 assists
Galaxy finished 11th in 2007 and 12th in 2008 (out of 13 teams)
The shirt's manufacturer, Adidas, was also delighted, as the Galaxy jersey became its worldwide best seller in 2007.
Galaxy capitalised on the interest in Beckham by immediately increasing ticket prices from $21.50 to $32, which helped their revenue for the 2007 season increase to $7,436,529. That accounted for an impressive 21% of the entire league's revenue.
The ironic thing is that Galaxy's form on the pitch during Beckham's tenure was little short of abysmal. After arriving from Real Madrid halfway through the 2007 season, he played just five times because of a persistent ankle injury and Galaxy finished 11th in the 13-team league.
The midfielder managed 25 appearances in 2008, scoring five goals and supplying 10 assists, but could not prevent Galaxy finishing joint bottom of the league, ahead of San Jose only on goal difference.
The biggest problem was that, aside from Beckham and Landon Donovan, the standard of the rest of the squad was fairly poor.
This was hardly surprising when Beckham's $5.5m basic salary and the $900,000 paid to Donovan accounted for a big chunk of Galaxy's salary cap, meaning that several members of the squad were earning only $12,900 per season.
It does make you wonder what Beckham's impact would have been had the team actually been successful.
The big question now is whether the momentum generated can be sustained once he is gone. After all, attendances and television figures had already dropped off slightly in 2008 following the sharp spike seen in 2007.

MLS will survive without Beckham - Gazidis
And sponsors are unlikely to take a favourable view of the midfielder's departure. Herbalife, for example, have a clause in their contract with Galaxy requiring the team to have an "international star" on its roster, according to the Sports Business Journal.
Yet Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis insists MLS will continue to grow in the absence of Beckham.
"When the story of MLS is written, David will be a chapter, not the whole book," Gazidis, who was pivotal in bringing Beckham to MLS in his previous role as deputy commissioner of the MLS, told BBC Sport.
"The signing was a symptom of the success of the league rather than the cause. If we look at our new team in Seattle, who enter the league this year, they are the first side in the history of MLS to sell more than 20,000 season tickets. That is incredible and it's not down to David.
"MLS still has a terrific business plan built on slow and steady growth and continuing to take steps forward, year after year."
Gazidis cites the recent World Cup qualifier between the US and Mexico, which attracted a record audience on Spanish-language TV in the States, peaking at 10.7m, as further evidence that football is becoming part of mainstream culture.
606: DEBATE
BBC Sport's Simon Austin
"By 2050, one in four Americans will be Hispanic, and they have soccer in their blood," the 44-year-old, who was with MLS for 14 years, said. "The young kids playing the game today are able to watch on television, read about it on the internet.
"That wasn't the case even five years ago, when their only interaction with the game was to play with their 10 or 11-year-old friends at the weekend in a very regulated environment.
"Do I believe soccer can go up to another level? Absolutely."
Despite all this, there is still a palpable sense of regret when you talk to some football followers in the US about Beckham's decision to turn his back on them.
Markovits admits that when he looks back on the episode now, he sees a missed opportunity.
"If Beckham had stayed for the full five years, playing for the Galaxy and England, he could have gone down as a major pioneer of the game in the US. This is what he promised in that first press conference.
"I absolutely thought he would have attracted other top players, but he didn't give it a chance, he threw in the towel.
"I hope another team can bring a world superstar to the States, but whoever they get, they won't be able to match Beckham."

Opponents target Ronaldo for his arrogance: Arsene Wenger

London, Mar 6 : Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said that Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo is targeted for rough treatment by his opponents because “sometimes his arrogance is provocative.”

“Sometimes I feel Manchester United get too much protection and sometimes they don”t get enough and Ronaldo is a specific example of that. Sometimes his arrogance is provocative - and his class as well,” The Telegraph quoted Wenger, as saying.

On Wednesday, Newcastle United’s Alan Smith, who escaped punishment, scythed the European Footballer of the Year down. “When there is a bad tackle you have to be punished and get sent off,” Wenger said.

He believes the Football Association should clamp down more on particularly violent challenges. “They could create a special committee to analyse if three (games’ suspension) is enough or not. I feel in some tackles 10 games is not enough.”

Ronaldo was also struck in the face by Newcastle’s right back, Steven Taylor, but the FA said no punishment would be taken against Taylor.

Ronaldo himself was cautioned for diving in Sunday’s Carling Cup final, a booking that outraged Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
