KOLKATA: Churchill Brothers, who had beaten Mohun Bagan in the IFA Shield final last year, did an encore at the Salt Lake Stadium on Thursday. And the pain from the 1-2 loss would have been more this time for the home team.
The 122-year-old club, keen to lend the gloss to the centenary celebrations of their historic IFA Shield victory in 1911, were actually leading through an Edeh Chidi strike and looking good before their familiar foes snatched it away with second-half goals from Odafa Okolie and Charan Rai. As the Goan side celebrated on the synthetic turf, the home team players were left pondering what might have been.
Earlier in the afternoon, Southern Samity crushed Shillong Lajong 4-0 in the play-off for third place. Edmilson drew first blood in the sixth minute and completed a hat-trick with goals in the 36th and 60th minute. Francis Xavier slipped in one in the 53rd to make it an embarrassing scoreline for a team that was in the I-League last season.
Mohun Bagan and Churchill looked to be on equal footing in the early exchanges, both teams not averse to moving the ball forward, Mohun Bagan through studied build-ups and Churchill with more direct and deep passes in the attacking third - Odafa and Boima Karpeh clearly the targets.
But Bagan were soon making more inroads, and keeping the ball in the opponents' half ensured that it stayed away from the dangerous Odafa. Their attacks acquired an extra edge every time it came down the left flank, where Snehashish Chakraborty floated a few inviting crosses to the goalmouth.
In the 23rd minute, Chidi feigned past Gourmangi Singh but his left-footed grounder went abegging across the goalmouth, just out of Ashim Biswas' reach. Ten minutes later, Chidi's lovely back-heel in the box set Gouranga Dutta free but the right-half sent a weak grounder with the Churchill goalkeeper at his mercy. Then, in the 36th minute, Snehashish saw his left-footer deflect for a corner.
The goal came a minute later. Mohanraj's chip into the box was knocked into the goalmouth twice by Anwar and Chidi was around to volley home from close on the second occasion.
Churchill were suddenly stirred into more urgency and the first half ended with Deepak Mondal doing well to get the ball out of harm's way as Odafa and Boima converged on a long ball menacingly. The visitors presented a much more purposeful unit in the second half, and it didn't take long for the equaliser to arrive.
Raju Mangang found Odafa at the far post with a chip from the right and the Nigerian nodded in from close, goalkeeper Sangram Mukherjee not quick enough as he moved along the line. Chidi, clearly Bagan's most potent weapon, responded by letting fly a left-footer that grazed the crossbar.
Churchill, suddenly more mobile and purposeful, went ahead when Charan Rai, under pressure from Anwar Ali, found the net to the left of Sangram with a measured chip from top of the box after Odafa and Boima had left the Bagan defence in some disarray.
Both teams found a few bright moments thereafter and some bookings through acts of desperation, but Mohun Bagan never quite got back the promise of the opening half, and the echoes from 1911 faded fast.
Teams:
Churchill Brothers: Vinay Singh; Yumnam Raju Mangang (Khantang Paite 79 {+t} {+h} ), Gourmangi Singh, Ravanan Dharmaraj, Robert Lalthlamvana; Israil Gurung (Binish Balan 46th), Lenny Rodrigues, Zakeer Mundapara (Chandam Singh 92nd), Charan Rai; Odafa Okolie, Boima Karpeh.
Mohun Bagan: Sangram Mukherjee; Kingshuk Debnath, Deepak Mondal, Anwar Ali, Mohanraj; Gouranga Dutta (Satish Kumar 66th), Jayanta Sen, Rakesh Mashi, Snehashish Chakraborty; Ashim Biswas, Edeh Chidi.
Referee: A. Rowan (Services).

Chelsea gunning for Champions League glory

The question is why Chelsea should have only one Champions League final to show for all the money and effort they have expended in the competition since Roman Abramovich's takeover.
Domestically, Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti have delivered three Premier League titles for the Russian but it was the relatively unregarded Avram Grant, who having taken over from His Specialness, steered Chelsea to a final against Manchester United, which but for John Terry's pathetic penalty cost the mighty Blues the match.
This year Chelsea have not domestically been the same force to reckon with but in Europe they have been consistent and solid. Blues will now take on ruthless Manchester United in the quarterfinals and Chelsea have every right to believe that they can win against their arch rivals.
Chelsea gunning for Champions League glory
Manchester United have not beaten Chelsea at Stamford Bridge since 2002 and Ancelotti's men will be hoping that their good run continued against the Red Devils. Chelsea have already beaten United in Premier League 2-1 and the psychological advantage and can very well work for the Blues.
Chelsea will also have revenge on their mind when they lost to Manchester United in the 2008 finals at Moscow. Chelsea's success has been built on impressive home form and a rock solid defence.
And now they also have a striker Fernando Torres -- who looks bit patchy at the moment but with quality he possesses in him you just can't control that man when he is on song.
A combination of miserly defence and clinical attack is an excellent one to have and is that why Chelsea are hot favourites to finally lift the European Cup this season.
The experienced Ancelotti was brought in by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich to win the competition and anyone looking to bet on Champions League winner should remember this.

Churchill Brothers lift IFA shield

Kolkata, Mar 31 : Striker Odafa Okolie successfully guided Churchill Brothers to a 2-1 victory against Mohun Bagan to retain the 115th IFA Shield on Thursday evening.

Churchill’s victory on Thursday ended the dream run of iconic Kolkata based football club Mohun Bagan as they aimed to repeat their first victory that occurred exactly 100 years ago.

Odafa was flown-in to play this crucial final encounter for his capability to goal and he produced the same to level the score four minutes into the second half after Mohun Bagan went ahead with Edeh Chidi's goal in the 37th minute at Kolkata’s iconic Yuba Bharaqti Krirangan.

The visitors did not end there run there and earned the winning goal though a remarkable goal from Charan Rai outside the box in the 65th minute to give Churchill Brothers back to back IFA Shield.

In 2009, Churchill Brothers had defeated Mohun Bagan with goals from both Odafa and R Vashum to win the IFA Shield for the first time.

The win also enabled the new coach of the Goa based club, Drago Mamic, a huge relief and an opportunity to continue his stay in Goa and build the side for remaining matches of I-Leauge.

The victory earned Churchill Brothers Rs 10 lakh and Mohun Bagan Rs 7 lakh as the runners up.

Ronaldo will be back for Spurs game: Mourinho

Madrid: Cristiano Ronaldo should be fit to play a part in Real Madrid's Champions League quarter-final first leg against Tottenham Hotspur, coach Jose Mourinho said on Wednesday.
The club's leading scorer has pulled out of Portugal's friendlies against Chile and Finland after aggravating a hamstring strain in last weekend's victory over Atletico Madrid.
Real said on Sunday he would be sidelined for two to three weeks.
Ronaldo will be back for Spurs game: Mourinho
"I hope he's back for the Spurs game," Mourinho was quoted as saying on the club website (www.realmadrid.com). "With his mentality we think he'll make it, but it will be tight.
"If he returns like he did for the Olympique Lyon game to make his contribution to the team, it is always welcome."
Ronaldo damaged his left hamstring during the victory over Malaga on March 3, but returned to help Real beat Lyon 3-0 in their Champions League last-16 second leg last week.
The nine-times European champions host Spurs in their quarter-final first leg on April 5, and could also have striker Gonzalo Higuain back in their ranks.
The Argentina international has been out since having surgery on his back in January.
"He played in a training match for the first time today where we used players from the youth team to make up numbers for 11 against 11," Mourinho added. Many of his squad are away on international duty.
"He played 60 minutes. Obviously he isn't ready but he's on the road back. I don't know if he'll make the game against Sporting Gijon (on the weekend April 2/3), but if he doesn't he'll be back soon, and he'll be welcome as one more.
"With so many games to play before the end of the season it is important to have him as well."
Real are chasing honours on three fronts. They are second in the league, five points behind arch-rivals Barcelona, who they also meet in the King's Cup final on April 20, and they are in the last eight of Europe's elite club competition.

Dr T Ao Regional Football Academy in Nagaland: Rio

Kohima, Mar 25 : Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio today told the assembly that the government was in the process of establishing a Regional Football Academy with support from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Presenting the budget speech on the floor of the House today, Mr Rio informed that the sports academy to be named after Dr T Ao, one of Indias greatest football players, would aim to produce quality footballers and motivate youngsters from all over the region.

Regretting that Dr T Aos contribution to the nation, who was the first independent Indian Football Team Captain for London Olympic in 1947, has never received appropriate recognition, the chief minister informed that the state government has recently taken a policy decision to present all awards to winners of the State Sports Award at Raj Bhavan to encourage and felicitate the achievers.

He also informed that Nagaland is a participating member of the Indian cricket family. A Cricket Academy in the state is scheduled to be functional from this year. The establishment of the Nagaland Cricket Stadium in Dimapur will give the game a major boost. ''I am confident some of our own cricketers will someday reach the highest level of the game,'' he averred.

Alves agrees new Barca contract

Madrid: Barcelona fullback Dani Alves has agreed to extend his contract with the Spanish league leaders until the end of June 2015, the club said on Tuesday, dashing the hopes of potential suitors across Europe.
"Barcelona announces that they have reached an agreement with Dani Alves to extend his contractual relationship with the club for three more seasons until June 30, 2015," Barca said in a statement on their website (www.fcbarcelona.com).
The pacy 27-year-old Brazilian, who played at last year's World Cup finals in South Africa and is one of the most popular players with fans of the Catalan club, was linked in the media with a move to Premier League Manchester City.
Alves agrees new Barca contract
Many of Barca's attacks on goal rely on Alves's high-energy playing style and dashing runs down the right flank and he has forged a highly effective partnership with Argentine World Player of the Year Lionel Messi.
Alves, who Barca said would sign his new contract on Wednesday, has made 141 appearances since joining from Sevilla at the end of the 2007-08 season, scoring 11 goals, including a brilliant strike against Getafe in La Liga at the weekend.
He has 12 assists in the league this season, as well as one in the Champions League and two in the King's Cup.

It is not easy being an official, admits Bhutia

A good start can work like magic, says coach Stanley Rozario

(From left) Shankar Mahadevan, Nim Tshering Lepcha, Bhaichung Bhutia, John D. Menyongar and Stanley Rozario, at a city hotel, on Tuesday.

Calcutta: Bhaichung Bhutia may have made himself unavailable for selection for East Bengal this season owing to injuries, but he wants to take field for United Sikkim FC (USFC). USFC is the club he co-owns, along with singer Shankar Mahadevan, and it will play in the second division I-League, which starts from March 31.

“I am still not fully fit, but I really want to play. If not from the first match, I would surely like to play some of the matches,” he said on the sidelines of the launch of the club, here, on Tuesday.
However, he did clarify that he if he decides to quit, it would be from East Bengal. “I stick to what I said earlier. I keep my promises”, he said.
For Bhaichung, it was a dream to own a football club and starting USFC was a dream come true. “It was always a dream for me to play for India. Of course, I have achieved that and I went on to lead the side for so long. My second dream was to run a football club successfully. You can say I have taken a baby-step towards fulfilling that,” Indian skipper said.
“We started USFC two years back in Sikkim in a very small way. Now, it’s time for us to move to the next level. Obviously, I want it to grow into a big club, one of the biggest in the country. It’s so important for not only Sikkim, but entire North-east India. There is an abundance of talent in that part of the country, which really needs to be nurtured.”
Bhaichung admitted it’s not easy to be an official. “Being a footballer is much easier. It’s far more difficult to be an official. Negotiating prices with the players is really awkward. Especially being a footballer, it’s so difficult to bargain with fellow players. My friend, Rennedy Singh, gave me real hard time. He had quite a few offers in hand and to coax him into the team wasn’t an easy task,” he said. But at the end of the day, Bhaichung is satisfied with the final squad.
“We have a very good team. We have a perfect mix of youngsters and experienced players along with four foreigners. As a new club, we couldn’t ask for more. But the real work is to go out and play as a team. Win is what matters in the end,” the owner said.
The players have been contracted for three months initially. The club might go for bigger names, depending on their performance in this season.
“Of course, I don’t expect anything absurd. I know how difficult it is for a new team to climb up the stairs. But our target is to establish ourselves in Indian football scenario in the next three years. I hope our youth development programme will produce quality footballers for national team regularly,” Bhaichung said.
Coach Stanley Rozario knows that the path ahead for his team may not be too rosy, but he is still confident
“We are bound to face the problems a new club faces. But we have a decent team, with lots of former East Bengal and Mohun Bagan players. They know what needs to be done in a situation like this. And the presence of Bhaichung will make all the difference. Our immediate plan is to perform well in the coming one-month and prove ourselves. A good start can work like magic,” Rozario said.

Lionel Messi is highest paid footballer

New Delhi: Barcelona forward Lionel Messi is the highest paid footballer in the world while Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho earns more than any other manager in the game, according to a survey by France Football magazine.
The Argentina international, who is widely recognised as the world's best footballer and has won the Ballon d'Or for the past two years, earns 31 million Euros per annum. This amount that he garnered in 2011 came from his salary and publicity deals and is 3.5m Euros more than what Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo earns.
Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney, a former team-mate of Ronaldo at Old Trafford, is third in the list with an annual income of 20.7mn Euros. US-based footballers, David Beckham of LA Galaxy and Thierry Henry of New York Red Bulls, are fifth and 11th in the list with earnings of 19m Eurosand 13.6m Euros respectively.

In the manager's category, Mourinho heads the top-paid list as he earns 13.5m Euros a year. The Portuguese coach, who won the Champions League as well as Serie A and the Coppa Italia with Italian giants Inter last season, was appointed as tactician at Madrid in the summer.
Barcelona's Pep Guardiola is second behind 'The Special One' with an annual income of 10.5m Euros while Rafael Benitez, who is without a club at the moment after parting ways with the Nerazzurri in December 2010, earned 10.2m Euros. England head coach Fabio Capello is fourth with a salary of 8.5m Euros.
Last month Deloitte's annual report on European football revenues was released in which it was revealed that Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona are the top earning clubs in the world with Premier League powerhouse Manchester United following them in third.

Chelsea beat Man City to boost title hopes

London: Brazil internationals David Luiz and Ramires scored late goals as Chelsea beat Manchester City 2-0 on Sunday to climb above its Premier League rival into third place, boosting the reigning champions' hopes of a late push for the title.
Centre-back Luiz met a free kick by substitute Didier Drogba with a firm downward header into the corner in the 78th minute, before midfielder Ramires danced through the City defence to secure victory in injury time at Stamford Bridge.
The hosts were the better team in a generally dull encounter, with City — which now looks to be out of title contention — barely threatening home goalkeeper Petr Cech. City badly missed top-scorer Carlos Tevez, who was absent due to a groin strain.
Chelsea beat Man City to boost title hopes
Chelsea is nine points behind league leader Manchester United with a game in hand and now just four adrift of second-place Arsenal, having recovered from its mid-season slump and lost just one of its last eight league matches.
Fernando Torres, chosen ahead of Drogba once again, failed to break his goal drought for the champions that will now stretch to more than two months, with Chelsea not in action again until the start of April.
Indeed Luiz, who was bought on transfer deadline day like Torres, has looked more assured in front of goal than the Spain striker. The 21-million-pounds ($34 million) signing also scored in the Blues' 2-1 win over league leader Manchester United on March 1.
Both sides defended excellently in a well-contested match that yielded very few shots on goal. Chelsea's John Terry — the newly appointed England captain playing in front of his national-team manager Fabio Capello — and City's Vincent Kompany were exemplary at centre-back.
Aside from a fierce low drive from Yaya Toure in the sixth minute that Cech tipped wide, City offered precious little going forward with lone striker Edin Dzeko, who replaced Tevez, often crowded out.
Most of the action happened at the other end, although City goalkeeper Joe Hart was only tested once in the first half, holding safely a shot on the turn by Salomon Kalou in the 42nd minute.
Torres, hardly given a sniff by the outstanding Kompany, wriggled free once but his attempted shot was blocked by a last-ditch tackle from Nigel de Jong in the 34th.
Torres, Kalou and Florent Malouda combined well for the latter to dribble an effort straight at Hart at the start of the second half, which began in the same vein as the first.
Branislav Ivanovic's goalbound header from Frank Lampard's cross hit the back of Kompany in the 62nd as Chelsea continued to press and the hosts got their reward in the 78th.
Drogba, who had come on for the ineffective Torres eight minutes earlier, curled in a free kick from the left that Luiz headed beyond the dive of Hart and into the corner.
There was still time for Ramires to dribble through a couple of weak challenges to plant an unerring finish into the corner with seconds remaining.

Liverpool, City knocked out of Europa League

London: Liverpool and Manchester City were eliminated from the Europa League on Thursday night, and Giuseppe Rossi scored his tournament-high eighth goal to help Villarreal advance to the quarterfinals.
Three Portuguese clubs reached the final eight of Europe's No 2 club tournament, which doesn't include any English clubs for the first time since 2008 when the competition was known as the UEFA Cup.
Manchester City beat visiting Dynamo Kiev 1-0 as Aleksandar Kolarov scored on a 39th-minute free kick but lost the total-goals series 2-1. City's Mario Balotelli was ejected in the 36th minute for a studs-first tackle on Goran Popov.
Liverpool, City knocked out of Europa League
Liverpool, starting $ 56 million acquisition Andy Carroll for the first time, was held to a 0-0 draw by Braga at Anfield, and the five-time European champions were knocked out on 1-0 aggregate.
Rossi, who is from New Jersey, scored his 26th goal overall this season as Villarreal won 2-1 at home over Bayer Leverkusen and advanced to Friday's quarterfinal draw on 5-3 aggregate. Rossi scored the second goal of the match for the Yellow Submarine from 12 yards in the 61st minute.

PSV Eindhoven won 1-0 at Glasgow Rangers following a 0-0 tie in the first leg. At the 60-minute mark, Austrian referee Robert Schorgenhofer failed to call a hand ball at the goal line by PSV's Atiba Hutchinson on a shot by American midfielder Maurice Edu.
Spartak Moscow won 3-0 at Ajax and advanced on 4-0 aggregate.

Man United enter Champions League quarters

Manchester: Javier Hernandez's double sent Manchester United into the Champions League quarterfinals with a 2-1 victory over Marseille on Tuesday.
Having drawn the first leg 0-0, Hernandez put United ahead after five minutes after latching onto Wayne Rooney's cross.
The 15th goal of the Mexico striker's debut season for United came in the 75th minute, netting from close range after Ryan Giggs squared the ball into the penalty area.
Man United enter Champions League quarters
"Javier has got great movement," Rooney said. "Thankfully he is a finisher, which helps the team."
But Marseille was given a route back into the game in the 83rd when Wes Brown headed into his own goal from Lucho Gonzalez's corner while under pressure from former United defender Gabriel Heinze.
"They put some good balls into the box and made it difficult for us," Rooney said. "We knew they are a big, physical team with a lot of power, but thankfully we got through."
But the victory in the last-16 phase came at a cost for United.
During the first half, John O'Shea was forced off with a hamstring injury and his replacement at right back, Rafael da Silva, went off with the same problem after the break.
Marseille went into the match on the back of five wins in six league games and having not conceded in five straight Champions League matches.
After Hernandez breached the French defense, United had the initial momentum and he tested goalkeeper Steve Mandanda in the 23rd minute when Rooney was again the provider.
Marseille was presented with an opportunity to level in the 32nd after Chris Smalling was penalized for a challenge on Andre-Pierre Gignac, but Lucho Gonzalez failed to take advantage and sent a free kick wide.
Another chance to equalize came before the break when Souleymane Diawara got on the end of a cross from Taye Taiwo but from six meters (yards) out — and unmarked — he headed wide.
After a bright start United found it hard to carve out any openings and Marseille came into the game late in the second half.
But Hernandez's fifth goal in five games secured United's passage in Europe despite the late own goal.

Mohun Bagan 1-1 Shillong Lajong - North-Eastern Outfit Hold The Kolkata Giants

Lajong moving steady...

By Anselm Noronha

Ashim Biswas,Mohun Bagan(Mango Peel)
Mohun Bagan kicked off their IFA Shield campaign with a 1-1 draw against Shillong Lajong in a Group B encounter at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Monday afternoon.

Ashim Biswas gave Subhas Bhowmick's side the lead in the 32nd minute but it was canceled out by Lajong's Zenith in the 66th minute.

Bagan's Nigerian striker Edeh Chidi missed a couple of chances in the early minutes of the game as the Mariners failed to make their domination count.

It was Gouranga Dutta's flag kick that found Ashim Biswas at the right place to nod home the opener in the 32nd minute.

Minutes later, Gouranga wasted a golden opportunity to double his side's lead as Lajong went into the halftime break only 1-0 down.

Lajong showed more intent to go forward in the second half with Zenith and Ralte stringing together some good moves but the Shillong-based side were not clinical in front of goal.

In the 66th minute, Zenith finally found the back of the net through a brilliantly taken free-kick from the edge of the box.

The green and maroon brigade will be disappointed to start with a point while Lajong recorded their second successive draw.

Techno Aryan and Lajong FC share points in IFA Shield opener

Kolkata, Mar 13 : Shillong Lajong FC and Techno Aryan Club shared points when they drew 1-1 in the inaugural match of the 115th IFA Shield played at Yuba Bharati Krirangan here today. Local outfit TAC opened the scoreline when striker Thoiba Singh slotted home in a counter-attack in the 20th minute. But their lead was levelled six minutes later, when Shillong Lajong forward booted home to share one point each between the rivals in the Group B game on the artificial turf at YBK. Though TAC had dominated the proceeding but they could not make much of it in their advantage as the frontliners were clueless in the finishing line. Barring some surprising run with the ball and few good crossings from TAC's left-winger Baba Thunde, the local outfits played a most ordinary game failing to take advantage of home ground in the second half. TAC, a 2nd division I-League team, broke the deadlock in the 20th minute when Manipur's boy Thoiba Singh volleyed home a cross from Nigerian Baba Thunde to beat Lajong goalkeeper L Palte. Stung by a counter attack goal the visitors, who also play in the second division of I-League, regrouped and made a sporadic attacks to level the score. Their success came from a surprising defensive lapses when TAC defender Louise was fooled by speed and agility from Racy in the 26th minute of play. Agile Racy snatched from Louise and moved past another defender to bead Shibram Dey to restore the parity of the game in the round robin league play.

In the fag end, Baba Thunde made goal socring move but his cross into the empty goalmouth was wasted as none of his mate could make on time as ball rolled past line. Tunde, who was adjudged Man of the Match, also had another chance but he failed to hit the target.

Lajong were also unlucky not to have a goal when a shot from Lalramhua hit the cross-piece in the first half. Federation Cup winners East Bengal will take on Southern Samity in the Group A match tomorrow.

East Bengal are in group A with holders Churchill Brothers, Shandong Lueng FC from mainland China, Mohammedan Sporting (Kolkata) and Southern Samity.

In group B Mohun Bagan, Chirag United SC, Techno Aryan Club, Shillong Lajong FC, and Pune FC.

Champions League: Messi leads Barca into QFs

Barcelona: Arsenal's only shot of night turned the game — in favour of Barcelona.
Robin van Persie was ejected in the 56th minute for shooting after the referee had blown his whistle, Xavi Hernandez scored as Barcelona pressed its man advantage and Lionel Messi followed with a penalty kick for his second goal of the night.
With a 3-1 victory on Tuesday and a 4-3 aggregate win, Barcelona advanced to the Champions League quarterfinals and eliminated the Gunners for the second straight year.

"It's a total joke," Van Persie said. "I tried to explain there were 95,000 people jumping up. How can I hear the whistle? He's been bad all evening, whistling against us. I don't know why he's here tonight. We feel betrayed a bit. When it was 1-1, it was all to play for and in my opinion, this referee killed the game."
With Barcelona trailing 2-1 from the first leg in London three weeks ago, Messi scored in the third minute of first-half injury time.
But Barcelona defender Sergio Busquets headed Samir Nasri's corner kick into his own net in the 53rd. After Van Persie was sent off by Swiss referee Massimo Busacca for his second yellow card, Xavi scored in the 69th and Messi got his 45th goal of the season two minutes later after Pedro Rodriguez was fouled by Laurent Koscielny.
Van Persie's attempt that didn't count, which followed an off-side call, was the only shot all night by the usually offence-minded Gunners, who were outshot an incredible 19-0. Barcelona had 68 per cent possession and completed 738 passes to Arsenal's 199.
"They attack less. Maybe they play to keep the result," Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola said. "The reality is that they were not able to string together three consecutive passes and they were not able to shoot once on goal."
Messi scored after Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas gave away the ball with a back heel pass. Andres Iniesta played Messi clear and Messi flicked up and over on-rushing goalkeeper Manuel Almunia before volleying the ball into the net.
"To talk about if it's one of Messi's best goals, there's no point — he scores such great goals they become normal," Guardiola said.
Almunia had entered in the 19th minute after goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny had dislocated a finger, apparently while stopping a free kick by Daniel Alves.
Nasri won the corner kick that led the tying goal by outmuscling Javier Mascherano, starting because Busquets was dropped back to central defence due to Carles Puyol's knee injury and Gerard Pique's one-game suspension for yellow card accumulation.
Van Persie received his second yellow card in the 56th. The Dutch forward motioned he shot because he didn't hear the whistle due to noise from the crowd of 95,486 in Europe's largest stadium.
"If there were four, five, six seconds in between, you can make a check. One second? It's a joke," Van Persie said of the time between the whistle and his shot.
Xavi Hernandez tied the aggregate score on a shot that deflected off Arsenal's Bacary Sagna. He had collected the ball after David Villa guided Iniesta's short pass onto his path.
Messi's penalty kick gave him six goals in four games against Arsenal and Almunia.
"Again, Leo made the difference," Xavi said.
Busacca gave five yellow cards to the Gunners and none to the Blaugrana. Van Persie was given his first yellow card in the 45th minute for barging into Alves.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger thought the ejection changed the match.
"I just spoke to UEFA people and they are shocked as well," Wenger said. "You promise a fantastic football match, but what for? How he did it! frankly, it's embarrassing for the game."
Guardiola said the Arsenal manager had one request for him.
"Wenger told me to congratulate the referee," he said.
Messi, the two-time FIFA player of the year, has 45 goals this season and a Barcelona-record 33 in European competition, two more than Rivaldo. He leads the Champions League with eight goals this season.
Arsenal had one late chance.
With the Gunners needing only to score once to tie the aggregate and win on the away-goals rule, substitute Nicklas Bendtner's late run on goal was thwarted by Mascherano's tackle.
Van Persie had come back from a knee injury and Fabregas, in his first game at Barcelona since leaving its youth academy, had returned from a hamstring problem.
"I take full blame for the result tonight," Fabregas said via Twitter. "One of the worst moments of my life. I apologise."
