Churchill Brothers lift IFA shield

Kolkata, Mar 31 : Striker Odafa Okolie successfully guided Churchill Brothers to a 2-1 victory against Mohun Bagan to retain the 115th IFA Shield on Thursday evening.

Churchill’s victory on Thursday ended the dream run of iconic Kolkata based football club Mohun Bagan as they aimed to repeat their first victory that occurred exactly 100 years ago.

Odafa was flown-in to play this crucial final encounter for his capability to goal and he produced the same to level the score four minutes into the second half after Mohun Bagan went ahead with Edeh Chidi's goal in the 37th minute at Kolkata’s iconic Yuba Bharaqti Krirangan.

The visitors did not end there run there and earned the winning goal though a remarkable goal from Charan Rai outside the box in the 65th minute to give Churchill Brothers back to back IFA Shield.

In 2009, Churchill Brothers had defeated Mohun Bagan with goals from both Odafa and R Vashum to win the IFA Shield for the first time.

The win also enabled the new coach of the Goa based club, Drago Mamic, a huge relief and an opportunity to continue his stay in Goa and build the side for remaining matches of I-Leauge.

The victory earned Churchill Brothers Rs 10 lakh and Mohun Bagan Rs 7 lakh as the runners up.

Mohun Bagan, India's first club to win the IFA Shield in 1911 with 2-1 victory over East Yorkshire Regiment, have not won any trophy in recent time despite appointment of Subash Bhowmick as the technical director.

For third place Southern Samity beat Shillong Lajong FC 4-0 with hat-trick from Edmilson and Fransis Xavier
