Santosh Trophy kick-off to-day

The national football championship for the ‘Santosh Trophy’ kicks off on May 24 (Sunday) with matches in the eight clusters to be held in four centres – Tiruchi, Chennai, Tiruvallur and Coimbatore. Each venue will host two clusters.
The league fixtures in cluster III and IV and a pre-quarterfinal encounter between the winners of the two clusters will be held at St. Joseph’s College here.
The cluster III features Madhya Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Mizoram and Puducherry, while the other cluster consists of Goa, Orissa and Jharkhand.
Addressing media persons here on Thursday, the Tiruchi District Football Association (TDFA) president A. K. Yussouf said the tournament would be a treat to the local fans with some good sides participating.
He said Ravanan, alumni of St. Joseph’s College, as player (Tamil Nadu), and G. Thambiraj as referee would be the two men representing Tiruchi in the tournament.
“We have plans to honour former footballers from Tiruchi who made a mark in the national arena during the tourney,” Mr. Yussouf added.
