AFC festival beckons India's under-13 colts

NEW DELHI: A 22-member squad has been selected to represent India in the under-13 AFC Cup Football Festival (South Asian Zone) to be held at Yazd City, Iran from May 18 to 28.

The squad has been picked after a month-long camp in Chandigarh.

Besides India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan are competing in the festival.

"We will divide the squad into two teams so that everyone gets a chance to play. One team will play the first match while the remaining boys will play the next," said manager Satheevan Balan.

"Results don't matter at this stage. It's important to give an opportunity to all to generate interest at this age," he added.

Squad: Goalkeepers: Sam Nornoha (Goa); Subrata Das (West Bengal).

Defenders: Fwiden Bargoyary (Assam); Vijay Kumar (Haryana); Shahbaaz, Konjenbham, Maniranjan Singh (both from Manipur); Vanlalruata, Jonathan Lalmuansanga (both from Mizoram); Krishanu Santra, Rabin Mahato, Babu Mondal (all from West Bengal).

Midfielders: Lazimali, Bento Neuton Joe (both from Kerala); Lalthansanga, Lalmuanzova, Lalrintluanga (both from Mizoram); Sandip Bhattacharjee, Rajesh Goswami (West Bengal).

Forwards: Heisham Sailesh Singh (Manipur), Lalremuata, (Mizoram), Firozuddin Molla, Basu Mukherjee (both from West Bengal).
