Guite guides team to victory

Athletic Brothers edge past Citizen Club
Imphal, Aug. 27 : Hemin Guite’s solitary shot at the nets was all that Athletic Brothers Association needed today to defeat Citizen Club in the Maharaj Ghanendrajit Memorial Super Division Football League Tournament played at Khuman Lampak Main Stadium.
The first half proved to be a lacklustre affair with most of the action limiting itself to the midfield. The second half saw Athletic Brothers Association score the lone goal just minutes into the session.
Making a swift attack on the onset of the whistle, Henkhohao Vaiphei, running on the left, made a cross to Guite in the middle, who unleashed a stunner to ruffle the net in the 41st minute.
In a match of the M. Ibobi Singh Memorial First Division Football League, Social Welfare Congress edged past Super Sporting Club by 2-1 goals.
Both the teams failed to capitalise on the opportunities they got during the first 35 minutes of play.
Resuming in the second half, the Social Worker players drew first blood when S. Ranjit Singh scored in the 37th minute. Their euphoria, however, did not last long as Super Sporting Club player Himat Singh found the equaliser in the 49th minute after he anticipated a well-guided cross from Md. Hanan.
The winning goal for Social Worker Congress came in injury time (2 minutes after 70 minutes of play) from a corner kick taken by Ch. Dinakumar, which was headed into the net by S. Ranjit Singh.
