Kolkata, Dec 23 (IANS) Lethal striker Tolgay Ozbey struck the winner as Federation Cup winners East Bengal moved to the top of the I-League charts with a solitary goal victory over Goa's Salgaocar Sports Club here Wednesday.

After five rounds, East Bengal are on 15 points, while Salgaocar - who lost their first points in the tourney - stayed on 12.

Salgaocar matched East Bengal in the opening half with their upfronters led by veteran Ghanaian Yusif Yakubu repeatedly troubling the local side's rear guard.

Japanese Ryuiji Sueoka muffed up a golden opportunity midway into the first season, much to the relief of the East Bengal supporters at the Salt Lake stadium.

East Bengal looked a transformed side in the second session, as they controlled the proceedings and their hard work was rewarded when Robin Singh's centre was put into the net by Tolgay.

Chirag United pip AIFF thanks to Junior brace

Kolkata: Debutants AIFF XI dished out a spirited display but Chirag United rode on a brace by Elijah Junior to register a 2-1 win over them as the I-League 2010-11 got off to a low-key start at an empty Salt Lake Stadium on Friday.

Man-of-the-match Junior struck in the 3rd and 42nd minutes, while AIFF XI scored through Lalrindika Ralte who caught the eyes with a brilliant 21st minute strike.

There were no spectators in sight and there was not even a banner of the premier domestic tournament that ran into its fourth edition as the sprawling stadium wore a deserted look.

Even the power connection was switch off till it was restored at halftime. But on the field, Chirag showed some urgency.

With Junior and Johsimar upfront, the home outfit utilised the first opportunity they got as the former put them ahead 1-0 in what appeared an easy chance.

With no defender in sight, a long ball from the mid-field was capitalised by Joshimar in the right and the Brazilian gave a cross pass to Junior who tapped the ball home with a straight rightfooter.

The goal notwithstanding, AIFF XI players, who filled in the void left by disbanded Mahindra United, did not give their experienced opponents an easy outing in the middle.

There were no spectators to cheer them but Lalrindika's beautiful 30-yard shot that brought in the equaliser for AIFF was enough to send a message to the hosts' camp.

A curling shot from the diminutive player was beyond the reach of Chirag's experienced custodian Abhijit Mondal who dived to his right but only to see the ball fly into the net.

Seven minutes after scoring the spectacular goal, Lalrindika produced another eye-popper from a freekick but the shot hit the Chirag left post.

Lalrindika's brilliance lasted 31 minutes as the medio pulled a muscle to be replaced by Tirthankar Sarkar.

Chirag snatched the lead just before the half-time with their forward duo again coming to their rescue.

AIFF's Vishal Kumar failed to hold on to the ball misjudging the bounce on the artificial surface as Joshimar capitalised on it before Junior converted it easily.

The second-half saw lacklustre display from both the teams with some half-hearted attempts by Chirag United.

In the 88th minute, Joshimar fired one inside but only to be ruled off-side by referee P K Bose and the Brazilian was handed a yellow card.

In the dying moments, Raju Gaikwad almost brought on the equaliser for AIFF XI but the experienced former Dempo goalkeeper Abhijit Mondal saved Chirag the blushes with a fine goalline save as the debutants impressed on day one though ended at the losing side.

Team was outstanding despite lack of exposure trips : Coach Harjinder

Tashi Lundup

Returning to the city after winning the Under-14 Subroto Cup at New Delhi by defeating Mizoram in a penalty shootout, coach Harjinder Singh and the players were greeted by congratulatory notes from the sporting fraternity. The joy was clearly visible on the football coach's face as media-persons swarmed at the Sector 42 Sports Complex Hostel to get a view of the winning Chandigarh team that had created history by winning the sub-junior national title for the first time.

An ecstatic Harjinder shared how the odds were stacked against them but still managed to come out triumphantly. "I was not confident of winning the title this year, like I was last time. Some of our best boys graduated to the Under-17 level and we had to include five new faces in the team for the tournament. We only had six months to decide and make strategies for the tournament. Our main concentration was on five-six main players who had taken part last year and were expected to make a major impact for the Chandigarh team. On the other hand, we gave specific roles to the new players like keeping the ball to themselves, not losing the possession, check the opposition players and give time to other main players to make extra efforts. It worked," said the former international footballer.

Showering special appreciation on his players, Harjinder said that the team played better than expected in the final match and if it wasn't for their superlative performances, the team couldn't have win the elusive title. "All the players gave their best performances in the final. In the other matches, we attacked more in the first half and then defended in the second. We won three matches in tie-breaker. In the final match, we missed some scoring chances and also made some superb defending," Harjinder, who hailed Arjit's performance as a revelation during the tournament, shared. One of the reasons why Harjinder was not confident about team's win in the tournament was the lack of exposure trips.

Since April 2009, the Chandigarh Administration has not sent Chandigarh Football Academy players on exposure trips to Germany despite five-year Memorandum of Understanding with the Sportschule Egidius Braun in Leipzig, Germany. "The boys were outstanding despite lack of exposure trips. I was surprised with the way they played against some strong teams like Bengal and Mizoram. They played quality football," he said.

North-East teams extend dominance in Subroto

New Delhi: Subroto Cup matches on Monday at the Ambedkar Stadium were clearly dominated by schools from the North East. If it was the U-14 team from Mizoram that reached the finals on Monday, their seniors from Govt Mamit High School carried on in the same flow, asserting their supremacy over AFBBS (Air Force Bal Bharti School) New Delhi in the pre-quarterfinal of the U-17 category.

Another side , NCC (NorthEast Region) too shocked an experienced Haldia High School, West Bengal to confirm their place in the last 8. While Mizoram enjoyed their stint pumping three goals to put Delhi out of contention, NCC put two past the West Bengal side in a match that witnessed a lethargic play from the football powerhouse of the country.

“Playing with West Bengal is always hard since they have a strong football culture. Since it was a do or die match for us, we had planned to put in an aggressive strategy. I guess we managed to perform and hope to continue with our form,” said officer in-charge Lt Col KC Kalita of the NCC team.

After going for the breather without disturbing the scorers, NCC struck twice in the second half. Just six minutes into the second half, Manneingir opened the scoring for NCC. The strike infused fresh life in NCC and they sped up the game and dominated possession. However NCC found it hard to strike through the Bengal defence. A 68th minute strike from Mandila sealed the match.

In the second match of the day, Mizoram striker Joseph impressed with his skills in the scoring area returning with a brace to power his team to a 3-0 victory over AFBB, New Delhi. Unlike NCC, Mizoram consistently threatened Delhi and their first blow came in the 11 minute as Joseph converted a rolling cross to perfection to open the account.

The Delhi team was always struggling even as Mizoram gave them no breathing space. By the time Delhi could could initiate a move, Mizoram was ready with a counter. Six minutes after the first goal Joseph slammed a right footer to the left corner from the edge of the box to double the score. Reeling under two goals, the pressure to up their game saw them faltering at crucial junctures and comitting several mistakes. Mizoram who looked over charged in the second half, displayed superb understanding between their midfielders and flankers. Unsurprisingly a third was registered through Lalrempuia.

Nagaland pay the penalty

New Delhi: With their shaven heads and uniform, yellow boots, the boys from Hmarveng High School, Mizoram, gave an impression of military-like precision — organised, cynical, ruthless — but their on-field performance in the ongoing Subroto Cup was marred by missed targets and wide shots galore.

Against Pilgrim School, Nagaland, in the semi-final of the tournament, it was anybody’s game before Mizoram prevailed 4-2 in the shootout. Impessive throughout and creating several chances, Mizoram were let down by a faltering attack that failed to finish off the impressive moves created by the midfield.

In the battle of equals, Nagaland were formidable on field for the entire duration of the match, only to muff it up in the penalties and book return tickets. Both teams had the opportunity; both failed to make use of them or covert the half chances that came their way, taking the game into the tie-breaker.

After the first half went goalless, Nagaland upped the ante and delivered accurate attacks on the Mizoram goalpost. Lusinei cut from the right to position himself in the centre and slammed a powerful left-footer that was brilliantly parried by Mizoram goalkeeper Laldanmawia.

Apart from the two chances that Mizoram squandered through Lalrochhara, Nagaland’s gritty defence nullified all their attempts to pierce their territory.

Nagaland’s Renchamo then ensured that the Mizoram keeper had a busy day in office, sending a 25-yard scorcher to the right corner of the goal. Laldanmawia superbly dived and deflected the rolling ball from going back of the net in the 40 th minute.

In the penalties, Mizoram slotted home four of the five shots while Nagaland missed their second and fourth shots. Having started first, Mizoram were almost out of danger after successfully converting the fourth shot, their no.17 Lalrochhara stepped out, promising his team mates not to falter a third time, having fluffed twice before. As soon as he fired the ball in, he made up for all his errors. “When we missed the second shot, I didn’t have the courage to ask for a shot, but once Nagaland put two out, I knew I could make it,” he said later.

And coach Mawia admitted that his team missed chances. “Nagaland are tough opponents and we share a similar style of playing. My advice to the players was to initiate as much ground play but we were off rails more or less. Quality football is being played, we just need to make sure we don’t miss too many chances,” he said.

Mizoram are up next against two-time finalists Chandigarh in the title clash and, having got away despite all their on-field mistakes against Nagaland, coach Mawia knows there isn’t room for error in the final.

Shillong Lajong beat Sheffield FC in friendly

Shillong Nov 18 : Shillong Lajong FC today defeated Sheffield FC 1-0 in a friendly match played at the Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex here in Meghalaya even as the English football club side criticised the hard surface turf and the poor refereeing during the match.

Racy K Lalremmawia scored the all-important goal for Lajong in the 75th minute from a fine cross after Sheffields custodian missed to guard. The win for Lajong against the worlds oldest football club also surprised many who thought that the match should have been very tough for the home team.

The young and energetic Sheffield had in fact gave a tough time to their opponents in the first half tough found it uneasy to acclimatise themselves playing in the hard surface ground and poor refereeing spoiling the accurateness of the match by giving unnecessary fouls on almost every physical contacts.

Sheffield which dominated the play in the first half had few good chances but thanks to the fantastic saves from Lajongs keeper Gumpe Rime.

In the 16th minute, the English side got a chance to lead but the target on goal from within the box hit the post.

Sheffield FC coach Chris Dolby who described the match against Lajong as ''competitive'', said, ''We are not complaining.. but the referee should have allowed more physical contacts for the flow of the game. Back in England, physical contact is part of the game, challenges in the box are accepted as long as it is clean and we scored goals playing that way.'' He however contended that the standard of refereeing could be different from one country to another so also in India.

Shillong Lajong coach Pradyum Reddy, who echoed Dolby's remarks on referring stressed on the need to improve the standard of refereeing. ''referees should also go abroad to see the physicality of the game and learnt from it,'' he said.

Two members of FIFA's executive committee -- Amos Adamu of Nigeria and Reynald Temarii of Tahiti -- were provisionally suspended on Wednesday for 30 days by the ethics committee.

It is alleged they offered to sell their votes when approached by Sunday Times reporters posing as lobbyists for an American consortium.

FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke said on Wednesday he expected the vote to go ahead on Dec. 2, but soccer's governing body will have to act quickly and decisively to ensure it does.

England and Russia are bidding to host the 2018 World Cup along with joint bids from Spain/Portugal and Belgium/Netherlands while Japan, South Korea, Qatar, United States and Australia are candidates for 2022.

Voting rights are restricted to the 24 members of the FIFA executive committee. This compares to more than 100 voting members when the International Olympic Committee chooses venues for the Summer and Winter Olympics.

If Adamu and Temarii are expelled, it is unclear whether they would immediately be replaced -- FIFA statutes dictate that regional confederations choose the executive committee members -- or whether the vote would be reduced to 22.

Bidding nations may protest if the size of the already small electoral college is reduced still further.

FIFA officials on Wednesday did not want to discuss either scenario, saying it was premature.

"I'm not a prophet," head of the ethics committee Claudio Sulser said. "It's hard for me to answer, it depends on the evidence that is brought forward."

FIFA's ethics committee is relatively new, having been created in 2006. Its first chairman was former British athlete Sebastian Coe while Sulser is a lawyer and former Swiss soccer international.

One of its main briefs is to keep watch over the bid process for 2018 and 2022.

The committee said it would produce a final verdict on Temarii and Adamu by mid-November.

"I think we can take a decision before Dec. 2, ... probably between Nov. 15 and 17," Sulser said.

Two unnamed candidate nations will also be investigated for breaching rules on collusion.

FIFA has rules ban bidding nations from making agreements with each other, but collusion was something critics said could become a possibility when it was decided to choose two World Cup hosts at the same time.

The ultimate penalty could be disqualification of the offending bids, but FIFA on Wednesday were reluctant to discuss this possibility, saying there were numerous stages to pass before such a drastic measure might be taken.

Big budget but poor selection

New Delhi: At a time when the government has sanctioned Rs 10 crore for training and development of the Indian football team for the Asian Games, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has decided to field a bunch of novices for the prestigious event.
AIFF sources say the China-bound team could easily be the weakest ever to play in a major meet for India. “It is virtually our third team that will play in the Asian Games,” said a senior AIFF official.
“Since our first 30 players are in the Asian Cup camp, and national coach Bob Houghton is not ready to release any of them for the Asian Games, we have no option but to organise the camp with 24 players, who have very little experience,” the official said.
An official of the sports ministry said he was surprised to learn that AIFF was not sending the best possible side. “There is a huge budgetary allocation for the football team, and we expect encouraging results. But selection of teams is one area where we cannot interfere,” he said. The football event in the Asian Games is an under-23 tournament, but each nation is allowed to field three senior players
Federation sources said that it was initially agreed that a few players would be released from the Asian Cup camp for the Asian Games.
Most of these players fall in the under-23 category and are eligible to play in the Asian Games. “But in a meeting with the AIFF officials last month, Houghton said that leaving the players for Asian Games would not be right, since the Asian Cup was more important than any other tournament,” said the sources.
India are in a strong group, with Kuwait, Qatar and Singapore being the other teams.

Mizoram thrash Evangelical United

Chandigarh: Goals continued to rain on the third day of 6th Peace Cup as the spectators watched one-sided encounter like Tuesday at the Sector 17 Football stadium on Wednesday. The matches were reminiscent of yesterday's encounters when 25 goals were scored. On Wednesday, only 11 goals were scored but nevertheless it was a high scoring match.

Chandigarh Mizoram Union led the goal-rout with an 8-0 thrashing of Evangelical United. The Mizoram players dominated right from the beginning and found the back of the net with ease and never looked under any pressure. They walked into the breather with a 5-0 lead. After the resumption, the Evangelical team tried hard to restore parity but the Mizoram team were too strong for them. Three more goals were scored by the Mizo players and the spectators once again witnessed a one-sided encounter. Meanwhile, in the second match of the day, St Stephen's Football Club outclassed Thangkhul Students Club Chandigarh 3-0 to secure a comfortable win.

The focus shifted from the players to the goal-keepers as the custodians of both the teams made some gravity defying saves to keep their teams in hunt but it was St Stephen's Club who had th final laugh despite finishing without a goal till the lemon-break. They scored three goals in the span of 20 minutes to walk into the next round with plenty of confidence.

Churchill demolish Viva Kerala 4-0 in Fed Cup

Vasco, Sep 22 (PTI) A second half brace by Odafe Okolie helped Churchill Brothers to a convincing 4-0 win over Viva Kerala in their Federation Cup quarter-final league match at the Tilak Maidan here today. Churchill opened its account through a controversial goal in the 39th minute by Koko Sakibo.

Okolie scored in the 57th and 65th minute and Rouhollah Samieinia put the match beyond Viva Kerala with a gem off a strike in the 75th minute. Viva Kerala, who started their pre-season training 10 days before arriving here, lacked the pratice for a big game like this.

Their midfield failed to function which helped the new look Churchill-squad to dictate terms throughout the game.

The first half was mainly a midfield affair and Churchill opened their account through a controversial goal. Defender Denzil Franco from the right took a long shot at the goal which keeper Sherin Sam managed to block. Koko, who was clearly on the offside, pounced on the loose ball and slotted into the net before the keeper could tackle him.

Odafe Okolie, who saw his effort hit the post in the first half, then increased the lead in the 57th minute from a penalty after he was brought down inside the box by defender Bello Rasaq. The talismanic Nigerian then killed the match by scoring again eight minutes later with a powerful shot that found the roof of the net off a back pass from Robert L from a freekick.

Samieinia rounded off the tally with a gem, as he essayed a left-footer from the box, off a pass from Khan Thang Paite, which gave no chance to the rival keeper to react.

Churchill, who have collected full points from the match, will next face Sesa Football Academy, who lost to Chirag United earlier in the day, on September 23, while Viva Kerala will take on Chirag United on the same day.

Football coach Mughato wants to produce great players in the region

Kohima, Sep.20 (ANI): While thinking of the game of football in Nagaland, the name of Mughato comes naturally to one's mind here today.

Nagaland's Mughato, the talented football coach, is upbeat about producing football players from the region.

His career as a footballer started in 1995, when he joined the Assam Special Reserve Police.

He played for it for four consecutive years and then joined Dynamo Club, Guwahati before shifting to Mohameddan Sporting Club in Kolkata.

His desire to work for the youth in Nagaland brought him back to Dimapur where he has been working as a coach at the Youth and Sports Department.

Mughato has today put Nagaland on the football map of the country.

In 2008, a Nagaland team won the Under-14 Subroto Cup title for the first time.

"Nagaland Football Association (NFA) should start a league of its own, the Nagaland league. Until and unless that comes out, it'll be hard to progress. If NFA couldn't start due to lack of funds why not the Nagaland Government takes it up, if they want the sportspersons to excel, says Mughato, the football coach.

Eight players of his under-14 team were awarded scholarships and seven others were selected for representing Subroto-11 at Bangladesh.

The young coach, however, doesn't like resting on his laurels. He today wants the State government to frame a sports policy that encourages talented players.

"If the Government wants, it can create job for us. Like in Manipur, they are creating jobs for those who excel in National and international arenas. So, if the Government starts doing that, obviously then the players out here will also start giving their full time," said Mughato.

"We Nagas have much potential in sports. We are interested in playing games including football, cricket and others. We got potential. What we lack is we don't get enough facilities to become better sportspersons," said Shinmichin, a football player.

In Nagaland, Mughato is a youth icon, whose passion for football is widely viewed as an inspiration who could motivate many more youngsters to take up football as a career. By Peter Chachei (ANI)

AIFF to have a new general secretary

New Delhi: The All India Football Federation (AIFF), on Wednesday, initiated the process of appointing a new general secretary in place of present incumbent, Alberto Colaco.

The emergency committee of the AIFF, which met in the capital, interviewed the two shortlisted candidates — Kushal Das and Bishwajit Mitra — but is yet to finalise the appointment. While Das has worked with a sports management group and the International Cricket Council (ICC), Mitra is currently employed with a top steel company.

Colaco, who first became the AIFF honorary secretary in December, 2000 and was appointed the general secretary in 2004, will step down after the Asia Cup in January 2011.

The emergency committee also rejected a proposal from national coach Bob Houghton to take the Indian team to a west Asian nation for a preparatory camp for the Asia Cup. The committee felt the tour would be too expensive and decided to ask the coach to play friendly matches against some Asian and African nations in the capital next month.

The committee also approved the plan of staging the quarter final group league matches of the Federation Cup in four different venues. While Goa, Ludhiana, Chennai and Cuttack are the four likely venues, the federation is yet to take a decision on the venue for the semi-finals and the final.

A total of 16 teams — 14 I-League clubs and two qualifiers — will play in the Federation Cup. The qualifiers will be held in Goa and Assam.

The newly-formed AIFF XI will also take part in the prestigious knock out tournament to be completed by the first week of October. The federation has also rejected a plea by East Bengal and Pune FC not to use their contracted players from the AIFF XI.

There is good news for the juniors as the federation has managed to rope in sponsors, who will be taking the Indian under-15 to Florida, USA for one-year training in the IMG Academy. It can get a three-year extension, if the players make considerable progress.

Success narrowly eluded Tamil Nadu in this year's Santosh Trophy. But the tournament saw the coming of age of some youngsters
Over the last two years, the Tamil Nadu football team has dispelled some of the gloom that has traditionally hung over its campaigns in the Santosh Trophy. Consecutive semifinal appearances seem like more one swallow in summer, but viewed in the context of Tamil Nadu's past record (one final appearance in 1972-73 since the tournament's inception in 1941-42) and the far greater attraction that cricket holds in these parts, one begins to understand the scale and the difficulty of the accomplishment.
Tamil Nadu's run to the semifinal of the last edition booked it a place in the quarterfinal league this time around, where it was grouped with the likes of Mizoram, Delhi and host Bengal. The advantage afforded by the circumvention of the qualifying rounds was off-set by the high profile of the adversaries that awaited.

Convincing win

Tamil Nadu kicked off with a convincing win against Mizoram, with C.S. Sabeeth and R. Rajesh finding the net. The match against Delhi proved to be a little trickier and Tamil Nadu had to rely on M. Rajesh's late strike for a crucial draw, for next up were title favourites, Bengal.
The 2-1 win over the eventual champions that booked a spot in the semis was Tamil Nadu's best display in the tournament. V. Soundararajan, Coach of the Tamil Nadu team, said the win took some sting out of the subsequent loss to Punjab in the semifinal, a view that his deputy V. Robin Charles Raja agrees with.
“Coming from behind to defeat Bengal at home was very satisfying. They have a phenomenal record (30 titles and 42 final appearances) in the tournament and at times we out-classed them comfortably. The loss to Punjab was difficult to take. It could have gone either way, with Pradeep's miss coming at a crucial juncture. The match was even at that stage,” he says.
Instead Tamil Nadu ended up conceding three, two of which were due to massive defensive errors. "D. Ravanan, who had a solid tournament till then, made a big mistake. He is an I-league player and it can happen to the best. The defence just collapsed."
Several positives emerged from the bitter-sweet campaign however, including the coming-of-age of a few youngsters. R. Murugappan, a third-year engineering student from Madurai, scored in the 2-1 win over Bengal, and was generally impressive through the tournament, according to Robin.
“Nineteen-year-old Murugappan had a good tournament and he has already received offers from the likes of Air India. The left-winger played without inhibitions and in the game against Bengal, he completely out-played the opponents.”
Riju enhanced the reputation that he had made for himself in the previous edition of the Santosh Trophy, and left an anecdotal influence on the outcome of the tournament. “Riju was in good form as well. The goal against Bengal, when he rounded the keeper and slotted it home, may have won Bengal the trophy. The 'keeper was dropped and Abhra Mondal who stepped in, proceeded to shut Goa out in the penalty shoot-out in the next match (semifinal),” says Robin.
The results across two editions of the Santosh Trophy have been consistent, but what is surely a sign of progress is the far greater encumbrance that the team had to deal with in the latest campaign.
"In terms of quality, we were possibly a little worse off when compared to the team that we had for the last edition. A lot of the I-league players decided to skip the tournament and some of the I-league players were with the Indian camp in Portugal. But what we lost in terms of quality, we made up with discipline, commitment and team spirit. They bonded well as a unit and the average age of the team is 24-25.
We had nine fresh faces playing in the Santosh trophy for the first time. Except for the ones who have played in the I-league, the team was not used to playing on artificial turf. And the Nivea Radian ball took some getting used to as well. “Most of all, we had to play matches almost every alternate day. Perhaps with a day or two of rest, we might have pulled it off,” says Robin.
In what generally affirmed the spirit of the tournament shorn of its top-stars, Mizoram played out a hard-fought draw with Delhi in the penultimate game of the quarterfinal league. The possibility that Mizoram, which by then was out of the tournament, would capitulate, allowing Delhi to progress at the expense of Tamil Nadu was on a few minds, but it did not transpire.
“Against Bengal, we played the best. We were technically very good and started with an eye on the other result (Mizoram vs. Delhi). A convenient result there would have knocked us out and there was a lot of speculation. Thankfully it didn't happen and I thought ‘Football is alive'.”

Santosh Trophy to use FIFA-approved balls

New Delhi, Aug 6 (PTI) For the first time in its 64-year-old history, Santosh Trophy will use the FIFA-approved Nivia Radian footballs in the tournament.

Santosh Trophy: Delhi bow out with a draw

KOLKATA: All hopes that Delhi may have nurtured of progressing to the Santosh Trophy semifinals were nipped in the bud as Mizoram held them goalless in their final Group B quarterfinal league match at the Salt Lake Stadium on Wednesday.

Mizoram were already out of contention, having lost their first two matches. Delhi finished with three points from as many draws. Bengal and Tamil Nadu thus advanced to the last four from this group, joining Goa and Punjab.

In the late match of the day, Tamil Nadu struck a late goal to shock Bengal 2-1 in their final quarterfinal league match and thereby topped Group B. In a match that saw a 25-minute stoppage early in the second half because of a power-trip, Nilendra Dewan put Bengal ahead, while VR Murugappan and PC Riju scored for the visitors to help them notch a grand win. Last year's semifinalists Tamil Nadu thus finished with seven points and will take on Punjab in the second semifinal on Friday.

Bengal, on the other hand, have the tougher assignment of facing Goa in what will be a rematch of last edition's final, which the hosts lost via tie-breaker.

Wednesday evening's clash, reduced to just a battle to identify the group winners after Delhi bowed out following a draw with Mizoram earlier in the day, kicked off at a furious pace with both sides looking to play an attacking game.

Bengal had the better of early exchanges and could have gone ahead in the fifth minute when Denson Devadas glancing header off a Snehashish Chakraborty free-kick from the left came off the upright.

It was not long before the Shabbir Ali-coached side surged ahead. Midfielder Jayanta Sen played a pass on the right channel of the box in the 16th minute, which was nicely converted by Dewan with a diagonal grounder to the far post.

Bengal's lead didn't last beyond a minute. Murugappan, receiving a long ball in the Bengal penalty area, finished off clinically with a right-footer past approaching Bengal custodian Sandip Nandy.

Bengal had the chance to regain the advantage towards the end of the first half when Gouranga Datta, following a clearance off a corner kick, crossed towards the goalmouth for an unmarked Dewan.

But the youngsters faulty receiving gave Tamil Nadu goalkeeper A Arun Pradeep enough time to avert danger. Five minutes into the second half, the stadium plunged into darkness one more time.

Though power was back within seconds, the lights took time to take full effect, thereby resulting in the stoppage.

Bengal had a golden chance to seal the match soon after resumption when Shankar Oraon was served with a fine ball inside the box by Gouranga, but the former hit the side-netting. In the 71st minute, Dewan failed to chip a long ball over the goalkeeper.

Riju made Bengal pay dearly for the misses, scoring against the run of play. He played a wall pass with substitute M Elamurugan to barge into the box before skillfully beating the onrushing Bengal goalkeeper with an outside dodge and placing it home.

Bengal thrash Mizoram 7-1 in Santosh Trophy

KOLKATA: Bengal climbed to the lead spot in their group with a magnificent 7-1 win over a helpless Mizoram in the quarterfinal league of the 64th National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy at floodlit Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Monday.

Shankar Oraon (8th and 55th minutes) and Gouranga Dutta (28th and 38th minutes) struck twice each, while Tariff Ahmed (44th), Jayanta Sen (83rd) and substitute Nilender Dewan (90th) contributed once each to show the exit door to Mizoram.

The North East side struck the only goal through F Lalmuanpuia in the 67th minute as they picked their second consecutive loss in group B.

In the first group B league match of the day, Tamil Nadu scored through M Ramesh in the dying minutes to hold Delhi 1-1.

Following a goalless first-half, Delhi went ahead in the 81st minute with substitute David Ngaihte scoring the goal.

But Delhi looked complacent and their defence fragile, as they failed to retain their lead as Tamil Nadu took seven minutes to equalise.

In group B, Bengal replaced Tamil Nadu on the lead with goal difference with both teams on four points each.

Delhi slipped to third spot, while Mizoram are yet to open the account to see themselves out of the competition.

Toying with Mizoram's defence, Bengal took an early lead when the forward duo of Tariff Ahmed and Shankar Oraon combined well to open the account for the hosts.

Mizoram defender Zaidinmawia Hmar failed to clear the ball as Oraon utilised Ahmed's cross from the left to find the target without any fuss.

Bengal could have easily made it 3-0 as they missed a couple of easy sitters midway into the first-half, even as Mizoram's defence was nowhere to be seen.

But soon the floodgates opened for Bengal with Gouranga, scoring two back to back goals to put Bengal right on top.

In a 28th minute move, Snehasish's beautiful centre was capitalised by Gouranga who head it home to make it 2-0.

Mizoram's miseries compounded with Gouranga again finding the back of the net 10 minutes later.

Ahmed looked to utilise an Oraon centre but his miss gave Gouranga an opportunity to earn his brace as he converted with equal ease.

Down 0-3, Mizoram scurried for covers with Bengal piling on their goal glut.

A comedy of errors by Mizoram's defenders in the 44th minute saw Bengal take a commanding 4-0 lead.

Ahmed finally put his name on the scoresheet when he scored from a folly by Mizoram defender Hmar.

There was no respite for Mizoram after the changeover as Oraon struck easily in the 55th minute with the opponent's goalkeeper Danny Lalrohlua out of place to make it a five-star show.

To make matters worse, Mizoram were reduced to 10-man in the 75th minute when referee A Arjunan sent marching orders to Lalrinfela after a rough tackle with Bengal defenders.

Bengal struck the sixth goal when Sen tackled Mizoram's defence to score beautifully in the 83rd.

Brought in place of Ahmed in the 63rd minute, Dewan struck their seventh goal with a brilliant tackle in front of the goalmouth in the 90th minute.

In between, Mizoram scored a consolation goal through F Lamuanpuia in the 67th.

Earlier, the capital boys had a similar fate in their first group B league match against hosts Bengal who struck late in the second half to deny Delhi three points.

Having beaten Mizoram 2-0 in their first outing, Tamil Nadu looked to score in the 23rd minute when P C Riju's shot was saved by Delhi goalkeeper Pronoy Roy.

Tamil Nadu had another chance to go up two minutes later but T H Pathiban hit the horizontal crosspiece as both teams took a cautious approach to see a goalless first-half.

After the changeover, Delhi came close to scoring in the 57th when Mohender Singh's right footer from inside the box was saved by Tamil Nadu goalkeeper A Arun Pradeep.

Ngaihte was brought in place of Mohinder in the 71st minute as he went on to give Delhi the lead 10 minutes after his substitution.

Following a shot pass from the right, Ngaihte beat an off-side trap to give Delhi the lead.

But Delhi -- like in their last match against Bengal -- failed to retain the lead with Tamil Nadu stepping on the gas towards the later half.

Ramesh, who was brought in place of C S Sabeeth in the 70th minute, scored with a curling right-footer to deny Delhi three points as both the teams settle for one each.

The winners and runners-up of the group will battle it out with the top two teams from group A in the knockout semifinals to be held on August 6.

Santosh Trophy: Mizoram stun Kerala 1-0

Mizoram upset Kerala 1-0 to move into the quarterfinals of the 64th Santosh Trophy inter-state football competition here Wednesday.

Beikhokhei struck the winner in the 63rd minute by skillfully foxing two rival defenders and then played well with Lalhlimthra to finish off with a firm right footer that ended the campaign of five-time winners Kerala.

Kerala looked lacklustre as Mizoram dominated the show at the Salt Lake Stadium for the major part of the game.

The Mizos could have gone ahead in the later stages of the opening session, but David Lalrinmuana's power-packed left footer found the crosspiece in the way.

Mizoram will play Tamil Nadu in their maiden quarterfinal game.

On Thursday, title holders Goa will lock horns with Karnataka, while Services will take on Punjab in quarterfinal exchanges.

Mizoram move to QF

Kolkata, Jul 28 : Mizoram stunned Kerala 1-0 to advance into the last eight of Santosh Trophy by a second half goal from Bekhikhei at Yuba Bharati Krirangan here on Wednesday.

East Bengal's striker Bekhokhei right footed volley from a right flank cross did all the magic in the 62nd minute against Kerala in the last prequarterfinal game to take Mizoram into the quarter final for the first time in 64th edition of senior national football championship.

The resurgent northeast side, who surprised Indian Railways in the previous qualifying play when mideo Lalrinfela scored the winner had set date with five times winners Kerala.

A pre-match favourites Kerala after conceding the goal tried their best but wall erected by the Mizo defence was too tight to crack in the remaining 28 minutes.

Mizoram will now face another southern state Tamil Nadu on July 30.

Kerala, a twelve time finalists, were looked clueless after conceding the goal and faltered everytime when they moved for final killing. Kerala after an impressive win against Uttarakhand in their opening encounter, went on to hammer Himachal Pradesh 10-0 before giving some football lessons to Assam in their final group league encounter with a facile 5-2 victory to see them through to prequarter finals.

Mizoram's move to last eight was a saga with 1-3 down to Orissa, fought back brilliantly trouncing Bihar 10-0 before upsetting Railways by a solitary goal.

Mizoram's some individual talents in the form of Churchill Brothers winger Lalrinfela, F.Lalrinpuia, East Bengal striker Beikhokhei and Dempo midfielder Jerry Zirsanga combining well to undo soccer giants Kerala for the first time.

In the first quarter finals play Goa will take on Karnataka, and Services play against Punjab on Thursday.

Delhi escape to a narrow victory

Kolkata, July 28 : Delhi did it the hard way. Sitting pretty on a 2-0 lead, courtesy a brace by Hindustan FC striker Tuishim Mashangva and a Santosh Trophy quarterfinal berth seemingly within grasp, they bungled big time. Ranjit Thapa’s boys let rivals Chhattisgarh claw back into the match, draw level and show enough enterprise to outplay Delhi. When the match went into extra-time and into the penalty shootout, it appeared Chhattisgarh were favourites to win.

However, there was another twist to the tale. Chhattisgarh failed to score off the first two kicks and could not recover a second time.

The tiebreaker gave Delhi goalkeeper Pronoy Roy a chance to make amends for lapses during regulation time. Roy made an excellent save to deny Chhattisgarh playmaker Wasim Raja with the first shot.

Delhi now join Bengal, Tamil Nadu and the winners of Kerala and Mizoram, who play on Wednesday, in the quarter-final group league.

Delhi shot into the lead when Mashangva, midfielder Zenith Genius, headed in off a flag-kick. The 21-year-old pounced on a loose ball in a goalmouth melee. His second strike, off another header, was better. Mashangva cleverly headed the ball over an advancing goalkeeper from a long clearance by the Delhi deep defence.

Delhi however lost its rhythm in the middle. Roy conceded five minutes after running in. Mohammad M. Siddique cut in from the right and with Roy covering the near post, squeezed the ball between the goalie and the upright. The goal gave Chhattisgarh a new lease of life and they virtually laid siege on Delhi. Chhattisgarh drew level in the 79th minute, off a corner-kick.

Why FIFA says no to tech

fifa1.jpg
FIFA 2010
CAPE TOWN: High profile sports like rugby, tennis, cricket and basketball have seamlessly embraced technology to aid referees and linesmen, so why doesn't football?

The short answer is that Sepp Blatter and the FIFA hierarchy are from the old school and reluctant to dilute the human factor that has governed the game for so long.

UEFA president Michel Platini is in complete agreement, arguing that video replays would interrupt the flow of the game.

Their defiant stance is in sharp contrast to many other sports that have adapted to the modern age. For example, basketball referees use replay systems to make sure players are shooting within the time allotted by the shot clock, while in cricket, a third umpire, with access to TV replays, has been successfully adopted FIFA's position has again been brought into focus at the World Cup with a series of bad decisions sparking renewed calls for change.

Blatter awoke to headlines like, "Soccer must leave the Stone Age" and "FIFA fossil Blatter needs to be buried" after Frank Lampard's perfectly good goal was ruled out in England's 4-1 mauling by Germany.

Replays showed the ball was clearly over the line. Just hours later, Argentina's opening goal in their last 16 clash with Mexico was allowed to stand despite Carlos Tevez being in an offside position.

England coach Fabio Capello made clear how he felt. "It's incredible that in a time of technology, the referees aren't capable of deciding if there has been a goal or not," said the Italian.

England captain Steven Gerrard also called on FIFA to look at goal-line technology. "FIFA will have to look at that because I looked across at the linesman and he was by the edge of the area so how can he see if that's over the line or not."

While many of the referees and linesmen at the World Cup have been praised for their fitness and keeping their cards in their pockets, Sunday's howlers were just the latest in a string of questionable calls.

One of the most high-profile came when Mali's Koman Coulibaly disallowed Maurice Edu's goal for the United States in the 85th minute of their 2-2 draw with Slovenia, denying them a vital win.

French referee Stephane Lannoy also came under fire for sending off Brazil's Kaka against the Ivory Coast, while he allowed Luis Fabiano's second goal to stand despite a clear double handball.

Supporters of technology will say this mistakes could have been avoided. Football authorities have trialled goal-line technology before, but the International Football Association Board ruled it out in March.

It followed cameras being placed on goal posts and electronic chips inserted in the ball to determine if it had crossed the goal line, similar to the HawkEye technology used in tennis and cricket.

They have also tested using two additional referees, in the Europa League, to prevent mistakes, with that experiment is still being analysed. How long they can keep football as one of the last sports to adopt the latest technology remains to be seen.

But the ageing Blatter appears to be in no hurry to change. "No matter which technology is applied, at the end of the day a decision will have to be taken by a human being," he said recently.

"This being the case, why remove the responsibility from the referee to give it to someone else?"

FIFA's official spokesman Nicolas Maingot reiterated the stance on Monday. "We will not open any debate on refereeing decisions at the daily media briefing, this is not the place for this and you will appreciate that I am not competent to do that," Maingot said.
